Cheap lappy

Boo... I have SPG Amex and no BB deal.

The SD link takes me to a Facebook page where I have to log in... but I'm not on the Book of Face so no go.

how bout twitter?

I also had the SPG Amex, switched it to the Blue card since we hardly travel and would also be tied down to the SPG hotels.  After switching, all the offers/deals came.  Recent good ones are:

Costco $25 off $25
Tigerdirect $15 off $150
Newegg $15 off $150
Grocery (any) $10 off $50
Bestbuy $25 off $250

Something like that would work... the touchscreen is because they want to be able to draw and play touch games on it.

That's an old sale... nothing like that now.

Is the touchscreen a necessary option?  I get that Windows 8 features touchscreen heavily but it just seems like another thing to breakdown in about 2 years.

For kids I think it's a plus. They need a laptop/keyboard to do word processing (for all their reports) but the touch screen allows them to do more creative tasks like drawing.

Blame it on the iPad.

That make sense.  I think I would just get a tablet for the kiddo...but for me, I don't think a touchscreen is necessary.  Kinda of like tv makers pushing 3D.

The problem is that Windows has moved to a touch interface so while you'll use the keyboard and trackpad primarily for input, some things are easier to use touch.

The one I'm waiting to drop down to $200 is the Asus laptop you can detach the screen from so that you have both a tablet and a laptop.

Ended up getting non-touchscreen notebooks for the kids.

The cheaper touch ones were 11" screens and my kids said they wanted bigger screens so ended getting some 15.6" 4GB/500gb ones for $219.

The cheapest touch ones were $279 at Microsoft Store (with 10% student discount).

Cheapest touchscreen laptop I can find is at Best Buy, $229 for an 11.6" Asus (4geegs memory, which is pretty good):

Already bought the lappies for the kids, although the touchscreen is enticing.

I'm looking for a convertible Windows tablet for cheap... Microsoft is selling the HP Stream 7 for $99 (which is pretty good since it's running Win 8.1, not win 8.1 RT)... but I'm looking for a one that can be a notebook too.

Just picked up a chromebook from Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NC088EA

It was a lightning deal for $200 + tax shipped.  Ok price, probably better during BF.  Main specs include the new Nvdia quad core chip, 1080 13" screen, and 802.11 A/C.

Google is giving 1 tb google drive storage free for 2 years for new chromebook purchases, gonna see if mine qualifies.

Let us know how it is using Chrome OS.

While I do spend most of my time in the Chrome browser, I am more comfortable with the Windows file system and architecture. Being able to use legacy Win software is also a plus.

iOS is great for simplicity but I prefer a multi-window interface which Chrome OS does support. After using Android/Chrome, iOS and Windows... in both tablet and notebook form... I actually find that Windows is the best convergence OS.

At least that's the good thing about Android, it's brought the cost of Windows systems way down, I didn't think I would see brand name Win tablets for $99, but HP and a few others are available now.

That's why the iPad is hurting, their price premium is now more evident and as Android continues to add more Win-like features (like multi-window support) and Chrome OS gets more prevalent, it makes me wonder about iOS in the consumer computing space.

And BTW, MicroCenter has that same laptop I bought for the kids for $199 ($20 less than when I bought them).

Best Buy is also selling the Asus 11.6" touchscreen Win notebook for $179.99:

And they also have the new HP Stream 11.6" touchscreen Win notebook that uses a more powerful Celeron chip for $199.99:
