Cell Phone Help

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program

aye, but it doesn't use both at the same time. Go count the number off 800Mhz in the LA/OC/SD corridor... you'll likely need only one hand.

Nude,

You are quite right of course, at the risk of making this post too technical, the latest trend in cell is to make voice call data (a la VoIP). So 3G will increase voice call capacity quite a bit with the increased data capacity. 3G uses soft hand-off, while GSM uses hard hand-off, which means 3G will have significantly less number of dropped calls.

Thanks for the information so far, everyone.

So, it seems that, taking everything into account .... customer service, coverage, technology .... Verizon seems to be the general consensus.

I'd recommend Verizon as well. I used to have T-Mobile and coverage was so-so. I have AT&T now and it's a little better but not amazing.

I have had Verizon for 9 years now and completely love it!!

Every time me and my friends go some where remote my non-Verizon friends have no service and always end up borrowing my phone.

I'll also add that I spend a lot of time in far-out places in the hills and desert. The various people I'm out there with usually have phones from all the different carriers. If anyone has a signal, it'll be me (on Verizon). It's very rare that I'll have no signal and someone on a different carrier will.

My roommate has T-Mobile. Her phone will lose service roughly twice as often as my own.

As eff indicated, Verizon has great outlying coverage.

However, I don't have any issues with AT&T in and around Irvine, and need the international (GSM) option during travels. I'm quite happy with them.

SCHB

They don't, LL. And I'd be concerned that they charge more for detailed billing. Printing out the details of your calls may cost more in postage and paper, but seriously, who's going to just blindly trust that they are being charged fairly? An extra charge to keep them honest? Blech

I get detailed billing for free (paperless) for being affiliated with a corporate customer. You might check around and see if you can get a sign-up code. There used to be one for Abbott Labs retirees floating around on teh internets.....

Eff -

Thanks for the suggestion!

I actually still have my UCLA email account ... so I can sign up for Verizon's corporate discount through UCLA!

My verizon service is horrendous but Cingular is bad here also. I'm at the corner of Culver and Michelson in Irvine. I get between no service/no bars/1 bar. T-mobile's coverage map has me at 1 bar. So maybe i'll have to switch to Sprint. I can't imagine what my bills would be though. 458 minutes used 1168 in minutes used hmm....

If someone else is paying the bill (a company) then you get Verizon because they are the best in So. Cal. If you are paying the bill, don't mind a dropped call or two, want less expensive hardware and a somewhat human approach to billing, getting new phones etc. then I recommend TMobile. However, if they don't work in your house then it doesnt matter.

The iPhone is very cool, but I dont know that I would be prepared to depend on it for business. Apple has however done an unbelievable job of creating a product that creates a visceral and emotional reaction from the minute you pick that device up. I consider myself fairly levelheaded when it comes to technology, but I picked that thing up and something in the back of my head said "BUY THIS NOW."

jsboxer,

That's what I have heard also. That the Iphone is more entertainment driven rather than business. Thanks.

The company is paying for it. But wait, I'm an S-corp, so I AM the company.

Is Apple planning a second generation iPhone any time soon?

Don't know about 2nd generation. But Apple is phasing out the 4 gigs IPhone. I wouldn't be surprise if they come up with more models. Ttechnology the way it is.

Laing_Lies,

There will definitely be a second generation iPhone but when it'll be released is anyone's guess. My guess is the second generation will come out after the x-mas season is done in order to reinvigorate the buzz around the iPhone. Jobs wanted to sell 10 million units in one year so he'll need to keep it coming. The key question to ask yourself if you're really considering the iPhone is list of features you're looking for. Unlocked? 3G capability? GPS? Better Exchange support? More storage? If so, better to wait.

Disclaimer: I myself have drunk the kool-aid and bought an iPhone back in July.
