[quote author="graphrix" date=1239211453][quote author="Roo" date=1239171455]I think I'll do the Rally on 4/25 with BMW CCA LA Chapter and the Autocross the next day at the California Speedway.

I have a BMW, but it's a convertible so I've been told I can't do the actual courses, only the autocross... I'll see if people have been able to find way to race with a convertible. One of my friend has an M3, I'll see if he would let me race his car...that would be so much fun!

Thanks everyone for the info and I'll let you know how it goes.

Wait... you own a bimmer, and you are asking questions about the track... here? Roo... google is your friend. Go to bimmerforums, and learn from the IR's of bimmerland. I should smack you around a bit to prepare you for bimmerforums, you think we are harsh... Just use the search function there first if you think my reaction is bad here. There are some great guys and gals there who know more about bimmers than the general public, kinda like how some of us know more about housing. Just stay away from off topic there... it can suck you in. I don't want to lose you too.

Cmon Graph, you being harsh??? Well, maybe after reading your post to AI this morning. Thx for the link.

I can't make it to the Bimmefest however, it's the second year that I'll have to miss it. I hope I'm available next year.

Graph, I remember reading a thread on BF where a 17 year old kid was posting about how to get the most out of an M5....the other posters thought he was BS'ing and were making fun of him, obviously because of his age...then one Guy noticed a headline where a 17 yr old kid killed himself and 3 friends in an M5...everyone was kinda shocked, hoping it wasn't because they had become kind of attached to him...then they realized he was genuine, it was Him..

This was around a year ago now so I've probably got most of the story out of whack..but did you ever see that thread?

I saw it. It was posted all over the web. He asked how to disable the (I think) traction control system. And some members did provide the answer, perhaps unfortunately.

The M5 is a beast of vehicle. I have taken it for a spin. I did 120 in 2nd gear. yes 2nd gear. Anyone who lets a 17 year old have an M5, that asks questions about the traction control on bimmerforums, unfortunately deserves the risk/reward of doing so. Seriously, I had whiplash from driving that car, and I only half assedly knew what I was doing, let alone the 1/100th of a percent that a 17 year old kid would do. This is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. If I had a 17 year old, he/she better be able to afford an M5, because I am sure as hell not buying it for them. Take a 17 year old kid in car like that... and you will have an omelet later. 17 year old kids need to have a Corolla, or 68 VW bug. It's kinda like the girl from Ladera who took off with her daddy's Porsche, cars like that are meant for adults. They shouldn't be allowed to do over 70mph, let alone over 120mph. Then again, even adults get stupid, and the guy from TapOut proves this.

What it all boils down to, do not be stupid with your car, know your car, and know those around you. It's an experience that can make or break you. Save it for the track. It takes that mindset to avoid the disasters like this.

Yes, completely agree with you on that. Most of the young guys I know who can drive, have been brought up on carts, motorcycles and other faster vehicles and make their mistakes early.

I think its the height of parent STUPIDITY.... But this is orange county and common sense seems to be in short supply.

Alot of young kids want to drive the Mush-stang, but drive a car with a third the power and same weight. And really M5's aren't really that crazy fast, i feel sorry about parents getting their kids motorcycles. All the power of an F1, all the protection of a chair and the impulse control of a drunken crack addict.

As for racing, i'm taking the genesis for a small autocross event.

Yeah it was something like that, if I remember correctly none or at least most of the members didn't believe him..it turned out to be his Dad's Car right?

The thread. Kind of uncomfortable to read that. Yeah, parent's car. It was the M5board, and there were 5 fatalities (4 passengers + driver).

I remember that thread. I used to post over on MBWorld and it was all over there too.

Giving inexperienced children 500 HP cars is not a good idea. That M5 just vaporized.

As far as the TapouT guy. Looks like he was clean. But he was also an inexperienced

Ferrari driver. Those cars are light and fast. And if your not trained and experienced

with one at high speed. Its like playing with a loaded gun on the streets above 100MPH.

I heard he picked it up late this year. So he had limited seat time in it.

360`s have a habit of coming around on you if you let off too hard in a high speed turn.

If your going to enjoy a High Performance, High Horsepower automobile. Professional

training and some track time are mandatory. And keep it to a minimum on the street.

Its VERY tempting sometimes.

Yes it is, that's why I loved taking the 911 out to the track. It would really satisfy that need to see what the car can do without the fear of going to jail. haha Although, I will admit that I got pulled over on the 99 going 130+ mph but just got a speeding ticket because I was being very nice to the officer.

Once in awhile at 6:00AM on the way to Cars and Coffee I let her hair down a little.

Almost nobody out that early. But still gets spooky cause I know what will happen if I get caught.

Car and I go to slammer at those speeds.

That's why you see old farts drive slowly in their fast cars. It's not because they don't know how to drive. It's because they know their limits in controlling such beasts. You can be going 60 mph and leave everyone behind. Very scary. You have to be extra attentive and have self control.

Yep, was playing around with a few Exotics on the way... boy were they upset some crappy old looking mustang took them down.

Dont' do that often though, before you know it you're going WAY over 100. I did take the trubine streamliner there once. Lots of fun hitting the afterburners and causing a smoke show.
