Never head that term before. So it's kind of like "twinkie", except applied on a global/non-racial level.

yeah... but the drawback is u dont really have a place to really call "home"...  :( ...

I guess it depends on where your formative years were spent (ie your most vivid childhood memories). Even though I guess I fall under 3rd culture kid (citizenship in 3 countries - i guess that makes me a 4th culture kid?), I identify my "home" as the place we spent the least amount of years in simply because I remember those years as the best and most memorable years of my childhood.

The vast majority of American-born people do not have a passport.
Which is partly why American politics is so fucked up. People living in their sealed off bubble with no clue of how the world works. I will give you a pass SoCal, since you live in California, which exposes you and your family to all kinds of cultures, religions, ethnicities, nationalities, etc that most people in the flyover states will never be exposed to. I strongly urge you to take them on vacations abroad. It will pay off in the long run and they will get to see the world from different perspectives that will make them better people when they grow up. Especially if you're talking about "school" as in any level below high school. A week missed of elementary school spent abroad isn't going to stunt their education. The "real world" education they will get in that one week in a foreign country will be 100x more useful than any bullcrap they will teach your kids in that one week of elementary school.

Hahaha yeah dude!  Cause it could be anybody regardless of nationality, ethnicity, race, blah blah...

I'm telling u it's like u ask regular folks where's "home" and they know it right off the bat... Hahaha for us we hesitate and like gotta think about this for a bit b4 we answer lol... Or like when ppl ask u "what country r u from?" We got like a short version and then also a long version depending on who's asking hahaha...

gosh... simple questions that other folks take for granted sometimes... but for us its like... "aw shiyat, not that question again, ok short version or long version, hmmm do i trust this guy?... aww shiyat..." >_<...

Highly recommend for those who do not have a passport to get one, there are a lot of good reasons to have one in case you need to travel, or need another form of ID.  If you have the ability to get an additional passport from another country, it will give you more options should there be some kind of event or dislocation that makes your first passport less useful.

And... if you're paranoid about that RFID chip in your US passport: http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/15.01/start.html?pg=9

oh one drawback being 3rd culture is i noticed we tend to marry and go out with other 3rd culture ppl for some reason... so u kind of drastically limit ur dating pool =_= sigh haha

Do you mean 3rd culture = 3rd generation immigrant?  Not sure what you meant there...

I don't think "3rd culture" is in popular usage these days.  For myself, I'm a "1.5 gen" and I married a 1.5 gen.

You don't have a passport?

You don't travel outside the US to need one, or you let the old one lapse?

I've never had one.

Yes, that's correct. I've never step foot off American soil except for a quick day-trip to Mexico, without a passport / passcard. No problem getting back in even though we had Mexicans with us including an illegal Mexican immigrant. Never been overseas.

Mr. SoCal also has never had one. 3 out of 4 of our parents also don't have them except for 1 who got it in her old age recently. Few people in our families have one. The vast majority of American-born people do not have a passport.

Neh. Don't really need one. Mr. SoCal's employer wants to send him on business to Paris. He doesn't want to go. So, he can use the excuse he doesn't have a passport. So, they make one of the foreigners go in his place. Then they offered to send me to Paris with him. Meh. Thanks but no thanks. I get all the foreign travel I need visiting Irvine. I can go to: China, Korea, India, and Mexico all before noon, without a passport, and be back to my house in colonial times of America by lunch time!

In terms of world tourism rankings, France holds the #1 spot and for good reasons.

So um...  does your husband's employer have openings?  I'd be happy to take jobs that sends me abroad on business trips.  ^_^;;

I'm planning a trip to Singapore-Malaysia-Thailand right now.
