I grabbed my passport and went to Woodbury Town Center to take care of some business yesterday.
Just kidding!
I don't have a passport.

:) Anyway, while I was there, a gold van drove by me, marked with this:

I got curious. Went home and looked it up.

??????????????????????
???????????????????????????????????????????

Wow! Whoever posted here on TI about the pathway to buying an EB-5 Visa was absolutely correct. I wish I could remember who wrote this. IHS, I think?

This is a regional center which smooths the transition for Chinese coming to the U.S. It acts as a concierge while helping them make the required $1M investment (or $500k in an economically-depressed area.) Not just homes. Retail. Restaurants. Other.

Being descended from the Pilgrims, I had no idea this existed. I thought it was some sort of rumor. I checked the U.S. Immigration site. It explains a little more here.

You don't travel outside the US to need one, or you let the old one lapse?

I've never had one.

Yes, that's correct. I've never step foot off American soil except for a quick day-trip to Mexico, without a passport / passcard. No problem getting back in even though we had Mexicans with us including an illegal Mexican immigrant. Never been overseas.

Mr. SoCal also has never had one. 3 out of 4 of our parents also don't have them except for 1 who got it in her old age recently. Few people in our families have one. The vast majority of American-born people do not have a passport.

Neh. Don't really need one. Mr. SoCal's employer wants to send him on business to Paris. He doesn't want to go. So, he can use the excuse he doesn't have a passport. So, they make one of the foreigners go in his place. Then they offered to send me to Paris with him. Meh. Thanks but no thanks. I get all the foreign travel I need visiting Irvine. I can go to: China, Korea, India, and Mexico all before noon, without a passport, and be back to my house in colonial times of America by lunch time!

SoCal - I was kind of like you for a while, didn't miss what I didn't know then went to Japan for my first international vacation, now I can't get enough.

This isn't a new thing...a lot of people did it.  It's not a secret..just the volume of usage is substantially increased.

You would enjoy Paris... should have taken advantage of that work offer.

School was in session at the time. I would only have them miss school if it was a family emergency. As you know, it's different when you have responsibilities (kids). If I didn't have them to think about first, we might have considered it.

I'm not quite sure how the topic changed so quickly. So...

Are any TI members here taking part in the EB-5 Visa program? From what Irvine Commuter says above, I'll assume many are.

traveling the world is so fun! u get to experience tons of different cultures and u learn so much not only about others but about urself

i dont travel as much these days (work and want to save money)... but i remember in high school i had to add pages onto my passport cause i ran out of space for visas n immigration stamps... and i always wish i can turn back time to go back and experience those times all over again

definitely expands ur world view... in my high school a lot of my peers traveled a lot too, and one thing ive noticed through the years now that we are all grown up is that we seem to be more open to new ideas and often see opportunities where others dont...

this program has always been in place... b4 it was a little more money i believe like 750k-1m real estate or business investment for a visa (cause i remember it was called the million dollar visa)... not 100% sure, but i believe because of the recession, they downed it to only 500k

i actually wanted to start a business related to this, where u get a usa lawyer with eb5 experience, usa realtor specializing in a region, and an ad agency in asia to promote, and asian lawyer just in case... all under one roof... but then i found out a friend of mine that works for morgan stanley already doing it (specializes in homes near colleges so clients or clients kids get an eb5 while at the same time house their kids through college)... didnt want to fuck with big money so i dropped that idea pretty quickly... lol

oh one drawback being 3rd culture is i noticed we tend to marry and go out with other 3rd culture ppl for some reason... so u kind of drastically limit ur dating pool =_= sigh haha

nono, like... for me third culture is when ur born here but "raised" in a foreign country... has nothing to do with generation... for example like u could be generation 8 and u go to india to work and ur kids grow up their, technically they are generation 9 cause theyre expected to "go back home" for college and/or for work

I predict the newest trend to cheat immigration is Chinese elderly slaves locked in Bedroom down for decades and forced to viewed million episodes of Korean dramas.

Yeah, that's real compared to this scam that was busted a few years ago.

"To the Chinese immigrants he recruited, Yupeng Deng was known as Supreme Commander. He offered them United States Army uniforms, conducted training exercises on Sundays, led marches in municipal parades and promised a path toward American citizenship.

More than 100 immigrants paid upwards of $300 to join the bogus unit, the authorities said, and $120 to renew their memberships each year. In addition, recruits could increase their rank with additional cash donations to Mr. Deng, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney?s office, which is prosecuting the case." http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/14/us/14scam.html

That was a part of my post regarding lottery immigration for Chinese and one contested that I was wrong.

yeah this thing has been going on since the 90s I think... its one of the reasons why the USA (even with our current sad fiscal/economic situation, will never be allowed to go down the gutter)

the countries a magnet and u suck up all the elite from all over the world... no way will the elites around the world let America go to shit and allow portions of their wealth tied to the states go down with the country...

lol just right now the Chinese r the biggest customer for this, but for awhile it was like the Japanese, then the Canadians, dunno I forgot... actually I think the Canadians are still a large chunk of the ppl that get eb5s...

but in all honesty, the ppl that do this is pretty insignificant compared to those illegally coming in... I think last year or last last year there was only like 4000 applicants TOTAL... and that's AFTER they changed it so it was easier to get an eb5... before like during the 90s like the states would be lucky if they even got 1000 applicants for that year...

btw I just remembered something a bit off topic but somewhat related... this eb5 program is nothing... if ur rich enough (1% of the 1%), USA harbors u even if u are a criminal in other countries...

I mean john mcaffees living it large right now back here after what? killing some dude in foreign soil... and then theres that Taiwanese fucker that scammed a bunch of VCs in the hundreds of millions in USD and instead of investing ran away with all the cash, and escaped here (he isn't even a USA citizen when he escaped here), last seen somewhere in Beverly hills and the USA refuses to deport him... lol
