Best Vac cleaner

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
[quote author="stepping_up" date=1216518492]One of the best and most versatile vacuums you can get is a Kirby, but you'll over pay if you buy it from the guy knocking on your door. Most of the distributors will give you a low ball deal. One of the nice things about buying it new is not only do have all your attachments, but it also comes with a lifetime rebuild warranty. Mine is 14 years old and I'm about to send it back to the factory for the first rebuild. For $139 they replace just about everything on it so it comes back just like day one. It can literally be the last vacuum you ever purchase.

Because we have a lot of wood floors, I keep in canister set up with the hose and little handle on it. The rubber wheels won't scratch the floor and it will be able to get dirt not just on the surface, but also the spaces in the floor. For carpeting, it can't be beat. Most vacuum cleaners leave a ton of dirt behind. The shampooer is awesome and so easy to use. The best set of attachments in the world too.

You can find them at garage sales or on craig's list used for pretty cheap. My niece picked a 5 year old one up for $25 recently. People don't ever really learn how to use them properly so they get rid of them.

My parents had a Kirby for years and really liked it. The only reason they gave it up was because they got older and the thing is built like a tank (i.e., it's heavy).

LOVE my Oreck. I take it in once a year for a free "tune up" once a year. These are covered for 21 years. Never had a problem. As far as a steam vac, I don't know.

I'm bringing this post back to life because I just bought a handheld vac and was so impressed (surprisingly! Who knew a little vac would be bring me such joy - my 16 year old self would be horrified) that I had to share. I got a Eureka 71B and it's awesome! I primarily wanted something for the car and for the stairs and this little thing kicks @$$! It was super powerful and also has this little flip door on the front that allows you to vacuum the vertical part of the stair easily. I was surprised at how much hair and dust the little guy was able to pick up...I actually took it upstairs and used it in my closet, even though I usually use the regular vac there. I'm happy with my little purchase. The only drawbacks that I see - it's not cordless and the handle is a little big for my hands to be comfortable.

I have 2 Roomba's, a Kirby, a canister type from Sears, and several el cheapo hand-held & stick type vacuums.

Years ago, my mother asked me for some $$ to pay off her CC bill. I gave her $$$$, and later that week there was a shiny new Kirby G2000 Limited Edition with all the accessories sitting in the living room. Despite my protests, my mother insisted that the $$$$ price was good and that it'd be mine later anyway. Um...

The accessories were used several times, then went back into the box. The Kirby is used mostly as an upright vacuum in the house. It's HEAVY. Yes it'd last a long time. There's people still using Kirby model 500's from 1948 in good working condition. If you want a Kirby, you can buy one cheap from Recyler.com or Ebay.com. Get an used one and play with it first to see if you like it. Don't spend $1000+ on a new one and regret it later. You can buy an used one locally for $150!

The Roomba is the ultimate lazy person's vacuum. It doesn't pick up everything but does 80% of the surface job. I only need to drag out the Kirby once a month now. The Roomba does have other issues, such as battery life, and replacements will get expensive. But the time saved is worth it.

If you'd prefer a standard canister type vac, just go to Sears and buy one with extended warranty. Anything goes wrong, haul it back to the store and they'd send it in for repairs.

My 16-year-old self would also be disgusted with my affinity for vacuums. Really, it's my boyfriend's fault. He has an old Kirby G4 (I have no idea what this means) and he loves, loves, loves it and talks and talks about how great Kirbys are to anybody who will listen. A few months ago, I came across an ad on Craig's List for a really cheap G5 and we called the lady selling it immediately. Later that night, we had dinner with my family and I told them that we had to get going to pick up our new Kirby and they thought that we were nuts for buying a second one. So, now we have one upstairs and one downstairs, and we don't even have carpet downstairs. I love using the various accessories and we also use the G4 to clean the carpets with some foam stuff that my boyfriend buys. Oh, and I also bought a cheap little vacuum a few weeks ago for our stairs. It was $15 or less on sale at Walmart with the college dorm stuff. I haven't used it yet but hopefully it works well!

Has anyone ever heard of the Rainbow? We saw these guys at the OC Pets Fair.. they do in-house demos and is sort of like a MLM marketing company... Anyways,, that baby is strong.. instead of using a paper or bag-less filter it actually uses water to filter the vacum air. The draw back is the sucker is like $3,000... I would buy it for around $1,000, but that should be the last vacum you'll ever need...

on another subject.. does anyone know of a vacum repair shop. I know there is one in Heritage Plaza and one in Woodbridge... our vacum roller gave out... all those nights using the vacum to stop the baby from crying...

You haven't put him/her on the dryer in the bouncy seat? I know you're not supposed to do it, but there are a lot of things you aren't supposed to do. Never had a problem and our logical minds led us to the conclusion that we never would. Our little guy lived on that thing for a few months. BTW, I'd never even spend 1K on a vacuum, the last one you'll ever need is a big, fat lie.
