Best Vac cleaner

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
Hi,

My question is similar to the one posted sometime ago about home appliances (abt the best washer and dryer thread).

Considering buying a new vac (under $125) for carpet and bare floor as well as one steam vac(under $2oo-250 ).

Any recommendations?? Also if you are happy with your purchase where did you buy it from?

.

Did you check Craigslist? You can sometimes get a great deal. I just sold an almost new $300 Electrolux vacuum on Craigslist for $100.

Was it a steam vac?

Nope, just a regular canister vac. Although, after pulling my old files it was a Kenmore (not Electrolux). It was a nice vac though - I'm actually sorry I sold it now.

The only problem with used appliances is that if they have any problem you can't return. Sometimes you can get a good bargain but not always .I was wondering which one is good:Eureka ,hoover or bissell?

They all ... suck.

LOL. I'm a big fan of the canister vacs and not the uprights. I think the uprights are too hard to push around, and it's difficult to vacuum stairs with them.

Irvine Westpark, check out Hoover S3755 Bagless WindTunnel Canister. I hate bags so this one worked out well for me. Rated high by a couple of websites. I bought it new about a year ago for less than $150.

Semi-related.. SharkSteamMop - a steam mop for the floor, anyone try it? There's been infomercials for them. I've been thinking about getting one and they are relatively inexpensive.

for the hardwood we have the dirtdevil Kruz, bought it for $100 at best buy. Works very well, no complaints yet (we have had it for 5 months now).

I've been thinking about getting this as well, but I didn't want to have one more gadget to store. If you buy it, keep us posted if it's worth it or not. :-)

I'm a big fan of the Roomba for basic (i.e., non-detailed cleaning). I have a Hoover upright for the corners and a dust buster type vac for oopses.

Wow, apparently I'm a vaccuum junkie. :-S

Thanks to all of you for replies.

I brought Bissell healthy home for $229 yesterday .Hope this performs well.I had a though time deciding between Hoover and Bissell as both of them have pretty similar features.Looked at Dyson too but it seemed pretty pricey.

Looking at the replies I think an average home needs at least 5-6 vacs. One for regular carpet and bare floor ,One steam vac plus one light weight to do daily cleaning plus one cordless for car and stairs plus roomba and so on. I wish they made something that was good for every floor.

Now my next job is to find one good steam vac .I read on amazon lot of complaints abt both hoover and Bissell (tank leaks etc.) so I got very confused.

Which one you have and would you recommend it?

A couple of my friends have the roomba, and they love it. It's great if you pets with hardwood floors or tile.

I just bought the Shark Steam Mop and it cleans our hard wood floors and tile really well. It's a keeper!

Sorry for being late to this thread but I hope this helps. :-) Per Consumer Reports:

Upright:

>Kenmore (Sears) Progressive with Direct Drive 35922 , $300, CR Best Buy

>Kenmore (Sears) Progressive with Direct Drive 36932 , $350

Comments:

Both Kenmores are top performers. Also consider the lower-priced Hoover WindTunnel Bagless U5753-900 if you're willing to accept less airflow, more noise, lower brand reliability for uprights, and--as with the Kenmore 36932--emptying a bin.

Canister:

>Electrolux Oxygen EL6988D , $400

>Kenmore (Sears) Progressive 27514 , $300, CR Best Buy

>Hoover WindTunnel Bagless S3765-040 , $250

Comments:

Superb carpet cleaning helps set the Electrolux apart from other canister vacs. The less-expensive Kenmore performs nearly as well overall for less. Choose the slightly lower-priced Hoover if picking up pet hair isn't a priority in your home.

Recently purchased it as well.

+ no chemicals, instant drying or use a towel to dry

+ small, compact, easy to store

+ great for maintaining already clean floors

+ reusable mop pad, machine or hand wash

- need to buy additional mop pads to get the entire job done

- doesn't clean 20 yr old floor stains!!

- for extra dirty floors, will need to mop over a few times!!

- need to use the mop at a certain angle or else it'll be difficult to push

Hopefully this product will last long and is durable.

Did you notice some white crusty build up inside the water tank? I'm assuming that is some type of salt deposit to make the water heat up faster? It was kind of wierd to see stuff inside a brand new tank, but it looks like it was intentionally there.

Did you do the papertowel test?

One of the best and most versatile vacuums you can get is a Kirby, but you'll over pay if you buy it from the guy knocking on your door. Most of the distributors will give you a low ball deal. One of the nice things about buying it new is not only do have all your attachments, but it also comes with a lifetime rebuild warranty. Mine is 14 years old and I'm about to send it back to the factory for the first rebuild. For $139 they replace just about everything on it so it comes back just like day one. It can literally be the last vacuum you ever purchase.

Because we have a lot of wood floors, I keep in canister set up with the hose and little handle on it. The rubber wheels won't scratch the floor and it will be able to get dirt not just on the surface, but also the spaces in the floor. For carpeting, it can't be beat. Most vacuum cleaners leave a ton of dirt behind. The shampooer is awesome and so easy to use. The best set of attachments in the world too.

You can find them at garage sales or on craig's list used for pretty cheap. My niece picked a 5 year old one up for $25 recently. People don't ever really learn how to use them properly so they get rid of them.

I agree that it isn't a heavy-duty product. It's perfect to maintain new floors, but I think one would need a heavy-duty steamer for dirtier floors. The white crusty build up inside the water tank is most likely mineral deposits from the tap water. We use bottled water to avoid clogging the steamvac with these mineral deposits. I use bottled water when ironing as well - it really makes a difference.

I have found that if you use the product very quickly, then you won't have to use more than one pad per use. We use it for a big space too - a big kitchen that leads into a family room, a bathroom, and the entryway. We do all this floor space with one pad. Then I wash the pad and have it ready for the next use (don't put it in the dryer and don't use laundry softner). We haven't even used the backup pads yet.

No, we didn't do the paper towel test. What is this for?

So far we are happy with the product. We usually use it twice a month and the floors look brand new. The hardest part of using the product is moving the rugs and furniture out of the room.
