best transportation to John Wayne Airport

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
Just found out my Capital One quicksilver card offers 20% statement credit for each Uber charge.  This is thru April 2016.  Also the card has no foreign transaction fees so it will be my go to card when traveling abroad.  I believe of all my cards, only Discover and Capital One do not carry a foreign transaction fee.

Signing up for Uber tonight.  Anyone got promo codes?  Best one I can find is this for $22:

and also $30 with "chaseuber"
not sure if you have to use a chase card to sign up though

Did you get a chance to compare the exchange rate they use to be sure they're not trying to make up for the lack of transaction fee with an unfavorable exchange rate?

I thought you just worry about the transaction fee, credit card/bank exchange rates are close to market rate no?  You get the best exchange rate by charging your card versus exchanging for currency when you travel.

Just did a fare estimate with uberXL to JW, $21-28, is that normal or does it reflect the 20% price drop they announced recently?

LAX is $85-113, how does it determine what your price is?  I would assume towards the higher end of the quote?

There's probably a slight drop in price there.  But my ride in december to SNA was $28 and my ride back in jan was $32, with rush hour traffic.

Booked my ride with execucar (supershuttle) again for LAX.  Actually came out to be cheaper than Uber for about $85 one way (tip included).  Plenty of 10% off codes for you to google online.  They also pick up at ground (luggage) level as well so you don't have to lug your crap to the upper terminal for uber.

I've been checking rates/availability for uber around my area, UberXL is not always available and the rates fluctuate to over $100 sometimes.  Don't want to chance messing up my vacation :)

I just did the same.  $83 after tip and coupon...  Normally I park there but when your trip exceeds 10 days, it's cheaper to pay someone to drive than pay to park.

+1

Used their app to get 10% off when booking to LAX.

My pickup at LAX thru execucar was just ok, driver had another fare dropping off upstairs so had to wait a few extra minutes in the smoggy lower section.  Also got picked up in a black suv so I guess I got a free upgrade as well.  A decent price compared to Uber for now for the LAX/Irvine route.  I checked Uber when I got out of the baggage claim and there were not too many XLs, maybe because it was late already?  But the fare was estimating over $100, and that wasn't surge pricing.

As for Uber, it worked pretty well in Europe for my short vacay.  Broke my Uber cherry in the Waterloo district in London, got picked up after dinner.  Driver didn't speak a word except a thank you when we got there.  Not bad.  Realized the app that shows your car coming towards you is delayed by about 10 seconds.  So when you see the uber near you, it might've passed you already.  Fares are definitely cheaper than the typical london black cab.  But the drivers you get are not as knowledgeable.  So next time, I would probably recommend a combo of local cabs and uber.    Had a few issues:  one uber driver canceled after he got lost trying to pick me up in Leicester Sq (lots of construction).  But I ended up getting charged!  I disputed thru the uber app and got my 5 pounds back.  Another driver that picked me up almost got into two near miss (less than an inch) accidents.  People on the street were pointing at us and laughing.  That was a scary ride.

Uber was a really good deal at Gare du Nord in Paris.  Lots of cabbies walk up to you to try to rip you off as you exit the station.  Traffic was a mess as every car was stopped and questioned by Paris PD.  Had to wait in the rain with my luggage for my Uber.  Later when we got to our hotel, chatted with another traveler checking in and realized my uber was only 15 euros from the station, while they had to haggle with the cabbie from 50 euros to 30 euros for the same trip to the hotel.  Uber to Eiffel tower and Louvre were all easy.  Got hit with a few surge pricing fares, but it was raining and I didn't mind at all for the convenience.

Also got my 20% statement credit from Capital One quicksilver card promo.  Promo expires end of this month.  Saved quite a bit of money since it was 20% off all uber fares charged on the card.  Also no foreign trans fees and decent exchange rate with quicksilver.
