I was there during the cultural revolution and I witnessed the evil side of humanity. The Party hunted down all the traitors consisting of intellectuals, land barons, those who possessed western made goods, teachers, those who read western books, religious people in any religion including Buddhism, people who played or owned a western musical instrument, people who watched Casa Blanca 30 years prior, women who once wore stockings, people who once dined in a restaurants operated by a foreigner, people who had books, arts and calligraphy, people who owned a steak knife, women who used a lipstick or perfume, people who drove a Buick, people who slandered the Party or Mao, people who wiped their butt with a newspaper who forgot to check Mao's picture was printed on the backside of the newspaper, people who pounded a nail on the wall to hang something and the nail exited through the neighbor's wall and pierced a hole on the Mao poster, people who got married and did not bow to a Mao portrait or forgot to say eternal life blessings to Mao during their ceremony, people who sneezed and their mucus ended on Mao's poster, sinners who did not display Mao's poster dead center high above their living room or above their bed, students who once studied abroad or in a school operated by a foreigner, students who possessed a science textbook, people who spoke a foreign language other than Russian, people who had respect and good manner, and etc.
Teenagers took, stole and smuggled all family possession of value, knowledge, deity, culture and added them to the burned pile out on the street that kept burning for months. These were books, musical instruments, family portraits, ancestor's photos, wedding photos, western clothings, heels, paintings, western style furniture, text books, manuscripts, bibles, Buddhist literatures, potteries and just about anything that is not edible.
The violations were endless and how the hell did the Party find out when the "traitor" themselves did not disclose them?
The snitch was rewarded and rose up in the rank known as the red guard. Who were these snitch? In every village there was an outpost kind of like a HOA in every neighborhood that governed orders where a committee conducted interrogation, cross checking of truth and lies and background check.
Every citizen was required to write an autobiography of themselve and other family members and friends. The content was then evaluated by the village judge for violation committed and crosse referenced with others for accuracies. Discrepancies led to court summons and convictions. Each violation could then be pardoned if he or she write about the violation committed by others such as teachers, friends, families or neighbors. There were literally millions of these "judge" across the countrysides and cities. Those who snitched the most also were recruited and promoted to sit on the bench. This is where the lowest form of corruption took place where pardons were traded for money.
No one trusted each other because of this. Husband did not trust wife, siblings betraying each other, parents snitched by their children, neighbors turned on each others, and friends could not be trusted. Animosities among spousal relationships resorted to snitching to getting even.
The Party was out to destroyed the intellects and people with wisdom. Those who displayed good manners were considered people of intellect and wisdom. Those with good mannerism caught a lot of attention and were snitched, paraded out on to the streets then either ended up at a firing squad or labor camp.
Mao's tool was the masses the peasants. Their naive minds were easier to mould and they can't decider righteousness from evil. People lived secretively and trusted no one. Those with knowledge hid their intellect and never voiced their opinion. Those who sympathized the dissidents by way of help such as offering a glass of water or bandage their wounds would be sentenced as conspirator. This meant death or labor camp for decades. This is the reason for so few good Samaritans in China when in the past this only led to trouble.
Mao thought he was a clever man believing that a socialist society would produced patriotism, teamwork, and prosperity. At first everyone worked hard at the farm and the country was on its way to recovery after a long drawn out civil war that forced the opposing party fleeing to Taiwan. The problem came when the lazy farmers got the same sacks of rice as those who worked extra hard on the farm. Eventually everyone got lazier.
Soon the country was facing a pest epidemic on agriculture. Mao thought of a clever idea. He had murdered all chemists decades prior and there was no one to create pesticide. Farmers who turned in locusts, grasshoppers, rats, cockroaches and other crop destroying pests got extra food vouchers. Instead of farming searching for pests was easier and instantaneous for food vouchers. As the pests were scarsed people started to breed them in their own homes to create a steady supply. Mao was stupid as human nature gravitated to shortcut and laziness.
Since 1949 the Party wiped out thousand years of culture, wisdom, knowledge, progress, arts, literature, intellect, loyalty, trust, and moral. The cultural revolution of 1966 destroyed all physical remnants once a sophisticated civilization.
During the foreigner occupations of China in the 1800s there were gifts of arts, potteries, China's and gem statues given to the British to promote friendship and trade partnership. China is demanding the return of these artifacts currently in British museums since China destroyed all off her own.
A Chinese architect who was educated at U Penn in the 1920's returned to China in the 1930's became the nation's architect for the socialist style of architecture. He voiced vehemently for saving the old temples, monasteries, and other relics but Mao and his regime destroyed them all. This architect begged him to spare the Forbidden City and was willing to accept fate of labor camp for his insistence.
Can we expect the boys and girls of the red guards to teach their offsprings to be honest, have good manner, respect, good moral and etc when they betrayed their families and caused the death of their parents. The preaching of Mao's red book stated that Mao is the head of their household and parents were not.
It will take many generations to undo the damages. Hopefully with an American education their grandchildren and great grandchildren will not resorts to the bad morals and cheating being witnessed at home.
