Apple Updates for September 2020

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
Anyone download iOS14?

Things I love: custom widget stack, pinning conversations in iMessage, and picture in picture. Wish there were more options for apps in the stack but that may improve as developers release updates. I'm also disappointed the YouTube app for iPhone doesn't support PIP (workaround: use safari to access desktop version of YouTube).

Things I hate: Having to use a keypad to set an alarm/time in the clock, calendar, and reminder apps. You can still roll the numbers with your finger but the window is too small to be useful.

The two things I have tried were pinning the conversations and Picture in Picture. Other than that haven?t played with it too much.  The Picture in Picture is great. Now I can watch Netflix and read TI at the same time :-)

I use Hulu live a lot but there is no support for Picture in Picture yet. Apparently it was available in beta and the first day ios14 was released and then Hulu updated something and it went away. But I read it will be available in a couple of weeks.

But it does support Netflix, prime, HBO Max and Disney plus

Instead of starting a new thread for iOS 14 I'll just throw my comments in here:

The widgets are nice. I'm using the multi-stack widget and it's pretty good. I miss the Favorite Contacts shortcuts in the "Today" page but I set up shortcuts to replace those.

Didn't know I could move multiple icons (iOS 11 feature I think?).

The new Siri is better.

Still exploring the features...

Never used shortcuts but it sounds useful especially when combined with the smart stack widget. Did you setup the shortcut to call your favorite contact?

Yeah. Set up shortcuts to call contacts and then added those shortcuts to the Today screen.

Not sure why they removed that... kind of dumb.

Smart thing coming up for new iPhones... adding TouchID to the lock button.

I ordered one of the new iPad Airs to upgrade from an older iPad I have. Specs look pretty great and now I'll have one less Lightning device.

Walmart had the base model for $559 but they sold out:https://www.walmart.com/ip/Apple-10-9-inch-iPad-Air-Wi-Fi-64GB-Space-Gray/650223175
Costco has the base model for $575:https://www.costco.com/new-4th-gen-apple-ipad-air-64gb.product.100697430.html
Apple has the base model for $549 with the Education discount:https://www.apple.com/us-hed/shop/buy-ipad/ipad-air
Target is ~$570 with the 5% REDcard discount:https://www.target.com/p/apple-ipad-air-10-9-inch-wi-fi-only/-/A-81498548
B&H has it for $599 but you save on the sales tax if you use their Payboo credit card:https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1594484-REG/apple_myfm2ll_a_10_9_ipad_airwi_fi_64gb.html

If you buy via Walmart or Apple (using Paypal), you can get 5% rewards on your Chase Freedom or Freedom Flex card this quarter:https://creditcards.chase.com/freedom-credit-cards/faq

Any other deals/discounts on these? Even though it is a new product, I wouldn't be surprised to see more discounts during the holidays.

iPad Air looks like a great upgrade. It's virtually a pro version but for less money. I wish they incorporated the same touch ID power button in the new iPhone. I'm stuck punching in my passcode all day long at work.

No Face ID?

I thought they were going to do that for the 12 but I guess not.

To answer Nguyen80, with masks, FaceID is not so convenient. TouchID in the sleep/power button would be nice for the iPhones.

Might get an updated iPad for kids this year. I?ll wait closer to Black Friday and check out the specials.

I snagged a 8th gen iPad for $279 ($50 off) at Best Buy. Unfortunately that deal is long gone.
