As usual, I went to hippie joint, because that's where vegans go. At this point, other than Tuesday afternoon, I have eaten out everyday and had a full dinner because I was starved. I haven't had time to work out, and weight is not even an issue as of this moment. I have acne  :-[ I look like a teenager.. in a very unflattering way.

Mid April update: Staying where I started out, royally. How is everyone else doing? I guess other Kulbert and Homer no successes? Oh well, good in a way, we get to bond month after month on a common goal :P

Qwerty, NSR: Yes, you guys were right.. 180 and 6 sounds about right. (But given the context of Mr.SoCal, my reaction was right.. Mrs.SoCal likes him umm.. well fed) I was also comparing it with my own weight.. I don't know where I am packing pounds, but oh yeah, women as heavy as me are at least 2 sizes bigger than me.. I will just lie to myself and say I am all muscle because it makes me happy.

I caught a small cold recently and realized my body aches so much more after lifting when you are sick.  I suppose it's because my body is focusing on recovering from an illness as opposed to building muscle (priorities, right?).

Anyone ever take a boxing/kickboxing class?  Sounds like it would be pretty intense...

Decade ago. Yes, it was intense, and after half the class, my only goal was survival till the end- most of the people dropped out midway. Also, male trainers had easier programs than female trainers. Reminds me, I need to start taking one of those classes. It will fun, intense and calorie torching.

Every once and a while I need to remind myself to eat healthy.  I fall into bad snacking habits having myself a chocolate tooth.  Last night while picking up a rotisserie chicken for some snack lunches for my son, I picked up ice cream!  Yes ice cream.  I have a predilection for moose tracks. Yummy, but I was good, I picked up two of the little single serves, one for me, one for the Mrs.  I then noticed the half gallon on sale basically for the cost of one more single serve.  Then I noticed the calories on the single serve.  So I put the half gallon back and just kept my single serve.

So this morning on my out of the house, I grab the 1Lb of strawberries I had sitting in the fridge.  I've been having a real bout at work with hitting the vending machine in the afternoon.  They're good, but not great, for strawberries. Sweet but still a little commercial bland courtesy of the growers fascination with strawberries that ship and sit.

Anyway, on to reminder.  After reminding myself with the USDA site.  I then proceeded to the admin's desk, picked up 6 hershey kisses.

Then set them on my desk, next to the strawberries.  One big one pound container of fresh strawberries, one tiny little arrangement of six hershey kisses.

Both roughly 150 calories.

Mmmm, my strawberries taste better.

don't worry, I doubt I'll waste the kisses...

:-) I wasted away the entire week. The weight didn't fluctuate at all! At this point, I think I might make an interesting study for some UCLA doctoral candidate.. I gain with 1300-1500 calories, all whole grains, all clean food. I lose/ maintain with sugar and fat surge, at 2500 calories.

I am eating a salad with black beans, apple and greens today.
The weight doesn't fluctuate, but eeks @ greasy hair and acne face. I need to look like the old woman I am.. I don't need teenage drama!

Things are kind of looking up here although "weight" isn't my main focus right now, just health. But it doesn't hurt that I'm down a few pounds. The scale is moving in the right direction as a sign of things improving overall. However, I think it might be too much of a sudden change. I'm starting to feel the opposite since being back on the thyroid medication - some trouble sleeping and a few heart palpitations.

Getting enough sleep is really important to avoid turning to food for energy to make it through the day. The last few days have been harder. I've been lying in bed awake at 2 a.m. hosting the implausible "What If" game with an unwilling contestant. The game works like this: Ask the lifeless contestant if they are sleeping. When they murmur a faint, "Yes", take that as a "No" and begin the Lightning Round. Anything is a fair question: "If I had an accident and became a vegetable tomorrow, would you take care of me or throw me in a home?"... "Of these 3 carefully detailed retirement option scenarios I've laid out, which would you pick if you had to choose today?..."Would you be mad if I painted the inside of the house on a whim this summer without checking with you first on the color?"... "If I die before you, would you date any of my friends? If so, which one and why?"...

I'm still doing a really good job keeping the calories down. More sleep would help everybody, though.

:-) Sorry, I shouldn't be laughing, but this post just made me giggle.. imagining you waking up at night with thoughts of painting the house!! Just don't go online and order something!

I'm sure you look great, CZ. I think your weight is fine.

At least you have hair.  :P

The stylist I was excited about seeing - Anna Nicole's which I posted about above -- she stood me up on Saturday! I never even got a phone call. I just showed up and the salon owner said she called in sick. She asked me to see some guy instead. Edward Scissor Hands whacked off so much of my hair, you could make another SoCal out of it.  :( I said ONE INCH. He took about 4" off the length and like 6" in layers. I'm still in shock. And mad. There goes a year of growing my hair down the drain.

Hmm... maybe THAT is why the scale went down suddenly!

CZ, we might as well just shave it off and start over.

I just bought a treadmill last week and its been up and running for about 4 days now.  Bought the Sole F80, so far ive used it all four days and the thing is great.  very sturdy.  having this thing at home really makes it easy to work out, hard to make excuses when its just right in the other room. If any of you are looking for a treadmill i would recommend the Sole F80.

Yeah, I highly recommend kickboxing.  It was my favorite class when I was a gym member.  It is a great full body workout, not as intense as bootcamp classes.  If you can find a great teacher who will motivate you and make the workout enjoyable, it makes all the difference.

Have fun! :)

Good effort, NSR!! I think you are smart not to let your mind convince you that cheaper is better when it comes to the ice cream if that means taking a half gallon home with you. Having that temptation in the house just isn't worth it. If you guys follow the famous trainer, Chris Powell -- he only allows himself ice cream once in a while as long as it's eaten outside the house as a special trip. Yay for not falling into the trap.

I had a treadmill. They make excellent drying racks for damp laundry and coat-hanging for when company comes over.

I used to use my elliptical cross trainer regularly.  Then it got a little squeak.  I've tried but no go, the squeak is to stay.  Really annoying for workout, ten times more so for everyone else in the house.

It's not every night... maybe 4-5 out of 7.

Need to figure out how to burn more calories without hurting myself (I'm not young and in shape like Homie).

Every other day is good enough. 45 minutes is better than 60 lose weight. I have seen people carry hand weights, or wear a weight vest. Also, alternating the speed helps. Heart rate monitor to check your "burn range"?

SoCal, every time I see those kettlebells just sitting there, I remember your words "they make good door stoppers" :-)
I have had one or another cardio equipment at home, but never used any. Not very motivated to work out like that. I need fit people beating up the machine around me for motivation..

You really should not carry weights when you walk or run. It messes with your natural motion which leads to other areas overcompensating and then you get injured. Just walk or run.  Then do weights separately

So, when at the gym, twenty-something buff trainers and forty-something lady clients are my favorite people to watch.  Always wonder why they pay.. for the attention, or to actually work out.

On to fitness. swimming. I don't know if you all know (hehe, SoCal knows) that I am trying to swim for the past decade. I dress out. I get into the pool. I stay there, at the shallow end. That's all. Even my babies learned to swim, but I haven't been able to. I try a personal coach. Husband tries to teach me. Kids try to help. But no. Other than float, I haven't mastered a single stroke. This summer it will be 12 years of failure to swim.

Any pointers to learn easily? (I did read Tim ferris's lern to swim ;-))

That is awesome! I am proud of you. I am really surprised how much effort you're giving it! Pretty soon you'll be one of those dudes jogging down Culver shirtless during rush hour.

If you can float, you can swim! Keep trying! I taught my kids on my own (still working with the youngest one.) I start with floating on their back and "motor boat". Then we work on opening their eyes under water and holding their breath. Throw things in the water that can be picked up - first off the steps then the shallow end then deeper as they get better. Just not your car keys. One time, I was having a "blond moment"*** and did that once with my alarm-button cell battery car key things attached. Oops! Get some colorful diving rings. After that, they practice jumping in the pool off the sides. I try to encourage them to work on breast-stroke with their heads above the water. This way they are able to swim indefinitely to safety / the side of the pool quickly without coming up for air because sometimes coordinating the strokes with coming up is too complicated for a new learner. I also have them stick to breast stroke under water. After that, I teach them how to tread water.

I am a strong swimmer which I attribute to spending a lot of time in the water as child. I give my kids hours of water time per day during the summers. Play, have fun, and get familiarized at your own pace. That's what it's all about, imo.  (I personally am not a fan of "swimming lessons" for a new beginner. I had a very traumatic experience as a child with an instructor.) Think of swimming as dancing with the water, not beating the crap out of the waves. You will tire quickly and that is when accidents happen. I see adults like my husband who get into panic mode and "fight" the water. It's about being relaxed and there is only one way to do that. Learn how to work with the water to use the fewest and most effective strokes.

CZ, we can go swimming together this summer.  :)

*** Q: How do you drown a blond? A: Put Scratch & Sniff stickers at the bottom of the pool.
