<blockquote>Take this job - or shove it

Jarrod Posner - 70% pay cut

Old Job: Mortgage lender - $110,000

New Job: Enrollment counselor - $33,000

Hardest thing to give up: I miss the luxury of comfort, knowing we had financial security at all times. I wish I had been smarter.

Posner, 34, was a mortgage lender for home builder D.R. Horton making $110,000 a year until he was laid off last May. Despite applying for many jobs through job-search sites, he received only one offer through a contact at the University of Phoenix in September.

The position, as an enrollment counselor, paid $33,000 a year.

"I was actually thankful because I was getting a job but at the same time my wife and I realized we had to make a lot of lifestyle changes," he said.

Since then, the Posners, who have two children, foreclosed on their home, moved into a rental property, downgraded from two cars to one and learned how to budget.

But despite the hardship, Posner says he is content with his job and happy to be employed. "Through foreclosure and possible bankruptcy, we've realized as a family what's important." - Jessica Dickler</blockquote>

I was shopping at the Spectrum the other day and went into a shop looking for a belt. I figured a store selling nothing but jeans would be a good place to pick one up. Do they have any belts? No, of course not! But they had racks and racks of $150-$200 jeans. I guess when you blow that kind of cash on a pair of jeans, they must levitate on your cheeks...

Now that the US economy is nose diving--there were 2.4 million jobs lost in 2008--who is going to buy this crap? When will the OC lifestyle end?

I should note that the jeans store was completely vacant except for three sales clerks chatting amongst each other.

I think some businesses are finally getting the message. We made reservations at a popular B and B for this weekend that (in the past) had a two-night minimum stay, with NO exceptions. We asked to reserve only one night and they agreed with little protest. Last week, my husband bought an item at one of those kiosks at the MV mall and asked for a $10.00 discount - the sales clerk happily agreed!

My advice to everyone is to start asking for discounts. I've been uncomfortable doing this in the past, but not anymore.

That's a bit expensive... you can buy men's designer jeans from Lucky Brand web site for $100-$129.

If you like shopping at boutique stores, try visiting "Satisfy My Soul" at 236 Laguna Ave, Laguna Beach (<a href="http://www.satisfymysoul.net/">http://www.satisfymysoul.net/</a>). Get on their mailing list for sales events. Talk to the owner and see if he'd make you a deal.

Club Monaco had some great sales last month. $129 jeans marked down to $50 - 30% off = $35.

I just bought a nice big & fluffy American Rag jacket from Macy's for about $18 after mark-downs and coupons. :O

I think when we come out of this OC will be a better place, people will be driving small fuel efficient Cars, riding Bicycles and they will realize they dont need all that "stuff" like a 60" plasma screen in every Room...

Lets face it, Capitalism has burned everybody out, people were working 60-70 hour weeks, not taking vacations just to keep up with the Joneses....

It will take a while to go through the transition but in the end OC will be a much happier place...

Great post POITG!

It didn't happen in the 70's, 80's, or 90's, and it isn't going to happen now. Orange County could completely recycle it's population and you would still have people trying to prove their status by where they live, what they drive, and the clothes they own. It's in the water.

I woulden't say water... but I would say mentality. I STILL get so much crap for not purchasing a house. "Rates are down! Prices are DOWN! Whats to say! BUY BUY BUY!"

Frankly it gives me a headache. People just don't understand.

Don't you own a bunch of rental property? Frankly that says a lot to me. I woudn't inquire to anyone who owns rental property as to why they are renting their residence. You obviously know real estate.

Wouldn't that be nice....just imagine, you could finally go for a sunny sunday road ride and not worry about being run over by some bleached blond bimbo with *ahem* aftermarket parts driving an american gas guzzling war tank with 22 inch spinners while texting on her cell phone en route to fashion island!

Try to fit more stereotypes into one sentence and I'll be impressed.

Seriously though, I think that if our local economy does nose dive over the next few years, it of course will suck for those who lose their jobs and I am sympathetic towards them, but I'm really interested in how the mentality of OC and socal may be affected. Will people en mass become more grounded, down to earth, and less materialistic? Will the flagrant display of status through consumption and material objects continue to reign supreme? Or do you think that these social trends (aka cultural pathology) will be dispelled by the economic turbulence in the years to come?

O.C. folks get responsible with their credit cards

Exactly, it's society. Look at any major city, or any popular place to live and you will find the same exact characteristics. If you want Orange County to change, all you have to do is make it an undesirable place to live, or just less desirable.
