We are currently interested in the Woodbury community and love the idea of it being pedestrian friendly! Since we have little ones, just checked out the greatschools.net site to see how Woodbury Elementary rates and it was a 5 out of 10 and I think the parent ratings (had about 4 reviews) were about an average of 3 stars.

Are there any parents who live in Woodbury that can share their thoughts on Woodbury elementary???

Thanx in advance!

Thanks for the site info... while I don't yet have a child old enough for the elementry school, IUSD and a new school were two big reasons that I've been considering Woodbury for buying a home. I wonder however, if the newness of the development and the school plays a larger role in the difficuluties listed on the great schools site.. since there is bound to be some transitional/growing pains as the community comes into its own (?) Eg. Does anyone know anything about the principle/teachers? Eg. promoted/transfered for doing a great job =) OR driven out of her last location for being unbearable =( ?

Ok, my bad! I checked greatschools.net again and realized that the Woodbury Elementary that came up was the one in Garden Grove, CA, not the one in Irvine. I guess the one in Irvine is too new to have a review of its own...

Although I'm not a parent at Woodbury, I am in the education field.

The API scores for Woodbury look good to me. I'd call the principal and ask to visit the school, go to a PTA meeting, and otherwise try to observe the school. I've found that I can get a feel for the culture of the school by listening to other parents (and not just the ones who are motivated to post on greatschools.net) and looking to see what they have posted on the walls, etc.

A principal has an influence on the culture of the school definitely, but its really about the teachers and the students.

IMO, just because the school doesn't have the highest API scores in the district doesn't mean the teachers aren't just as good.

Also, go to their webpage on the IUSD link and check out their School Accountability Report Card (SARC).

Woodbury Elem. just opened in October. They moved El Camino Elem. to that site (teachers and all). It is a year round school. Check out the El Camino Elem. API scores.

furious,

Thanx for the tip on El Camino Elem becoming Woodbury! I checked out the school on greatschools.net and found that they were rated 9 out of 10 and their recent API score was in the high 800's (I think it was 885).

I really like the parent review feature they have at greatschools.net, but unfortunately, there were only two parent reviews on El Camino. One in 2004 rated the school high and had positive comments and the other one which was more recent gave them a very low score and negative comments. So it is hard to tell what the actual experience of kids/parents are from those two split reviews, but hopefully, some more parents will provide reviews in the next year...

Well, I attended El Camino, although it was in the late 80's, he he. I do know that over the years the philosophy and quality of the education has been a constant, and can imagine that its even better now that it is in a new location in Woodbury. Too bad they had to change the name, though :-(
