My family will be relocating to Irvine from the east coast and our son will be entering 1st grade.  Our zoned school is Woodbury Elementary.  I heard that getting into the school is no problem but was wondering if there will be any drawbacks given that he will be attending the school about a month and a half after it has already begun.  Any and all info would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

If you are already here or are visiting, you may want to talk to the principal and teacher for your first grader to address any late transition issues.

In 1st grade, a month and half may not be that bad, and considering Woodbury Elem is a year-round school (which I believe you are aware of), your son should be able to catch up. The only thing is he will be the "new kid" as many of the kids may already know each other from K and they've had over a month to get to know each other.

It should be okay, kids are very flexible when they are younger. I think 3rd grade is when that stubbornness kicks in. :)

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Only drawback is not knowing anyone.  That's it.  It's only 1st grade, so don't sweat missing any "academic" stuff.  If you're kid is outgoing and normal, I'm sure he'll have no problems making friends.  After one week, I bet he's integrated without any issues.

We go to a different year round school, and social-wise at that age I don't think there'll be that much of an impact.

At a month and a half out, your son will probably be starting up right after the fall break, so he'll be starting "anew" like everyone else in the class.  Last year, there were new kids coming in throughout the year in my kid's first grade class, and it seemed to generate lots of excitement when a new kid joined the class.

You should also have the choice to enroll your son in Stonegate Elementary (a regular schedule school) if they have space.

When we were at Stonegate a couple years ago, sooooooo many people were trying to transfer over from Woodbury Elementary that they had to put a freeze on it.

Stonegate is taking nobody outside it's zoned area.  Hell, they can't even fit their own kids in.

Yup, Stonegate isn't half way built out and they already are turning away kids that live in Stonegate at Stonegate Elementary

Stonegate Elementary doesn't have enough capacity for all the students in Stonegate.  They will start transferring students out.  Those paying top dollar to live in Stonegate, especially the more expensive homes like Arcadia and Sausalito, thinking their kids will go to Stonegate Elementary will be in for a big surprise.

FYI - this Option B in the charts above is old.  They are not transferring kids out and are doing the portable classrooms as someone mentioned in the Stonegate thread.
Yep, there was an article about this and I believe it was voted on by the residents to do the portables rather than have them go to schools not in Stonegate.

But that was for the short term, not sure what the solution is for the long term considering how many homes they are putting into Stonegate.

Time to make mid-rise elementary schools.

The use of portables is temporary until the new schools are built, then they will start transferring students out.

At the April 9, 2013 Facilities Study Session, staff presented options for housing students in the Northern Sphere due to accelerated projected student growth due to the recent demand for new housing.

The Board directed staff to pursue the option to temporarily increase capacity at Stonegate and Woodbury Elementary Schools until new schools can be constructed.

In order to meet our goals of adequately serving students with the most efficient use of school capacity, it is recommended that elements of Board Policy 7112 ? School Size be suspended for a two-year period, to allow a maximum enrollment of 1,200 for K-6 schools that are impacted with high enrollment growth.
