I saw these wood beams at Varenna.  They were a cool greyish color that matched the flooring.

Does anyone have recommendations or have done these outside the builder?

We just had beams put in our place after closing.  We are generally really happy with the work . . . I'd be happy to pass along my contractor's info if you'd like.

Technically would any carpenter who does crown molding and wainscoting be able to do this?  Or are wood beams more structural and a different type of contractor?

OC-Broker, would be great if you can pass me your contractor.

I thought these faux woof beam are installed similar to the crown molding with just nail and glue until I look it up.  The installation is a little different but does not look too difficult.

Awe no! I always thought they were way too heavy and hard to install for us regular diy folks.

Hmm.................. now I got another thing on "the list", assuming we've got pix of the ceiling before drywall. Don't want to hammer into the plumbing for the sprinklers.

Yep... those things are foam.

My neighbor put those in their house... it helps that they are very high up so you can't tell they are fake.

I have been told faux wood, real wood or MDF.

I had no idea there were so many kinds.  Faux wood is probably a lot cheaper than real wood but can you tell?  I'm not sure what MDF is, is it like the stuff crown molding is made of?

I heard ceiling wood beams are bad Feng Shui~  I really wanted to install these beams as it looks nice, but I am a little hesitant now and thinking about just going with crown molding all around instead of wood beams in the great room.  I am afraid that it will impact the resale value and limit my buyer pool by eliminating 80% of potential future buyers in the future (Chinese and Koreans).

Anyone else think otherwise about wood beams and its Feng Shui?  Please help me change my mind so that I can install the wood beams=).

I've also heard wood beam is bad FS, but I'm no expert.

I am actually about to have ceiling beams done by my contractor next week in my office room/area. I just googled beams and feng shui and started to check out some articles about these beams. I am instantly triggered reading this hocus-pocus about the house's energy and how the beams above the bed mean this or if they are above your desk in your office area then your career can stagnate ::).

In my eyes, it is no different than consulting with psychics for financial or romantic advice. I can't believe grown adults believe in this trash. Feng shui be damned, my beams are going up because they are sexy.

MDF is basically processed wood. For any of these the beam has to have a lighter foam core as it would be risky to mount without tying into structural beams.
