A 22-year-old woman was critically injured after jumping off the fifth floor of a parking structure at the Irvine Spectrum on Friday, police said Monday.
The suicide attempt occurred amid Black Friday crowds in front of a group of shoppers, one witness said.
Just before 2 p.m., paramedics were called to the Irvine Spectrum after a woman ?attempted to take her own life,? said Farrah Emami, spokeswoman for the Irvine Police Department.
Paramedics took her to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo in critical condition, said Capt. Steve Concialdi of the Orange County Fire Authority. She was breathing and had a pulse when she was hospitalized, he said.
Details about her condition on Monday were not immediately available.
Irvine police officials would not disclose information about the woman or what she was doing at the shopping center at the time.
Ayn Craciun, of Irvine, said she was having lunch with her family on Friday at the shopping center when she heard a ?loud whack,? then a commotion.
?We jumped up and turned around and saw a woman crumpled up in a fetal position on the ground at the car exit of the parking garage,? Craciun said in an email.
Craciun said she called 911 while a crowd of people gathered around and security worked to clear the area. She said there were tables full of people in the area when it happened, many of whom saw the woman jump.
?I can't get it out of my head. ... I?ve never seen anything like that before,? she said.
