My brother just sent out a plea to help.... With a 2 month old, wife and just him to do all the work by himself....

He needs to clean up the house, move all the rusted out and busted junk and strip the lower half before the black mold appears.

Hopefully it isn't horrible....

If there are any contacts there let me know.

While i'm not trying to seem facetious, there might be a few other people who need help also.... Like Houston, and about 10 other towns.

Awgee, I also have a question on if there are any tax breaks for people in national disasters.

Thanks all

FEMA just received the Katrina news they are on the way to New Orlean. You can contact them in 3 years.

Good Luck Bix. Your brother needs you for moral support. You can also see your nephew or niece and take out the wainscoting. Cheap laborer is $5/hr. Bix's presence priceless.

Man... I wish I could do something to help, or at least have some contacts for you. You're a good brother to help out. I wish you luck and hope all goes well. One day I hope I will be able to just pick up and leave to help out like bix. I really wish I could join bix to add what I could.

bix,

That is great you are coming out to help your brother.

- Bring all the tools you will need with you, Home Depot, Lowes, etc are running out, or have run out, of things you may need. Building supplies are running in short supply and getting expensive. Bring tarps, a hammer, nails, prybar, lots of trash bags, a shovel, gloves, etc.

- Do not expect to find a contractor, skilled or otherwise right now. The damage to the area is very wide-spread and varies from total losses to minor roof damage. There is not enough resources to do everything even in a month or two. Any contractor you can find is going to be very expensive. The contractors have damage to their homes.

- Be prepared for the heat and humidity. We have had unusual weather this week as it has been relatively cool and pleasant, but that is scheduled to end this weekend and it is going to turn hot again. Bring many changing of light clothes and sturdy shoes.

Good Luck,

- CA

Good luck, Bix.

Hopefully you can take a break every once in awhile and keep us updated.

Enjoy the time with your brother and his family.

Bring lots of that gel type hand sanitizer too....I'm sure there's some funky stuff brewing right about now.

Maybe some filter masks too...

Good luck Bix, you are a good brother.

Bix

Good luck and you are a great guy.

Think about Handi-wipes, canned food, and even a single burner stove with butane bottles(get at Oshmans, Big-5, or Costco) for heating water (even boiling it if needed), water purification tablets, flashlight and batteries (stores run out quickly), and heavy duty gloves. Can you take your two buddies, Mr. Smith and Mr. Wesson?

Be cool-stay safe!

I took along Herr Sig and Herr Sauer along with my comrades Mr. Mosin and Mr. Nagant. Mr. Barrett would have been obnixious.

But we are staying in the part of town with power. All the stuff is out of the house anyways and there are two locked doors. So unless they feel like carrying stuff down 3 flights of stairs, its going to be crazy. Plus there is a police station along with the only road out of the area. And they check everybody!

Anyways good luck - keeping safe and muddy...

Here are some photos of the storm that hit Texas.

Hurricane Ike

I was going to suggest that you rent a trailer to live in but I see he has

power. Might not be a bad idea anyway. We hired some people to haul

all our stuff to the swale from the inside of the house, after I ran a nail

into my foot after hurricane Andrew. Paid 'em $600 in 1992 dollars. Absolutely not minimum wage.

All our worldly possessions piled 6 feet high, going 100 feet in one direction

and 110 feet in the other.

Do take stuff with you. Remember the air ducts.

Good luck & let us know how you are doing.

bix, how goes the clean-up? Is your brother's house recognizable? Is Kemah functional?

Things in Clear Lake are improving but there are still hanging traffic lights and cops directing traffic at major intersections without power. Our yard guys came by this weekend and hopefully the mountains of tree debris will get picked-up in our neighborhood soon. Mosquitoes are terrible right now.

Good Luck,

- CA

just got back... i'm very tired and sore. We threw out all the junk, packed up what was left and cleaned and demo the lower level. Mulling around all the gunk and muck was not fun... By the second day the "wonderful" hot and humid weather asserted itself.

Everything got done and I just can't post pictures now...

Pictures and a story would be great. I think this will help some of those who have never seen the damage in person from a hurricane, like me, to get a better idea of what it is like from someone I know.

Unfortunatley I didn't get alot of pictures of the devistation of Galvaston, I was working too much. This little place is where my brother lived.

I must say that Texans are much more resiliant than Californians. They just buckle down and get to work, it was nice to see again.
