Since ps9 always posts about the real gamer consoles like the PS4 and the XBox One, I thought I'd open one up for the party console... the Wii-U.
When this first came out just over 2 years ago I saw no real reason to buy it. It was $300-$350 and it didn't seem to have any advantages over the Wii or the Xbox 360 with Kinect (which my kids had been playing more of). One of my kids really wanted it because of the gamepad, but I thought it was weird and just told them it was too expensive.
For the next two years, nothing really compelling made them ask for in and during that time, the PS4 and XB1 came out. Again, one of my kids really wanted one or both systems but the price and the fact that any games they wanted still released on the PS3/XB360 also saved me from those expensive consoles.
That changed when a friend brought a Wii-U over to play. After a few games of NintendoLand and Super Smash Bros, the kids were hooked. So that became the surprise gift for ChrisKwanukkah.
It turns out it's a really fun multi-player system, and games like Smash Bros can have up to 8 players... even NintendoLand supports 5 players because the gamepad supports an extra player.
The gamepad is actually an interesting concept. Not only is it a controller but it's an extra screen so one player can just use it like an oversized Nintendo 2DS instead of having to look at the TV. Additionally, for some games it shows a different screen to enhance game play. What we also found out is you can turn off the TV and watch Netflix or Youtube on the gamepad itself. It also doubles as a TV universal remote.
For physical type sports/dance games, the Kinect is still king, but for mutli-player controller playing, the Wii-U beats out the other systems.
Does anyone else here have a Wii-U?
