Washington Mutual to close 190 offices

...Expects to lose $1 billion in 1st quarter of '08

Washington Mutual Inc., the nation's largest savings and loan, said Monday that problems in the mortgage and credit markets are forcing it to close offices, lay off more than 3,000 workers and set aside up to $1.6 billion for loan losses in its fourth quarter.

...Elsewhere in California, Washington Mutual will close home-loan-related offices in Downey (Los Angeles County), 35 jobs; Irwindale (Los Angeles County), 35 jobs; and Irvine, 230 jobs.

QWERTY,

My main beef with BofA is that they charge the living daylights out of you for ANY little thing. We will see what happens though. I really should start looking for a credit union.

Ninja - i havent had the same experience (well for the last 5 years at least). In college i did have a checking account where they did charge me $2 any time i went inside which kind of sucked, but now i have various accounts with them as well as a credit card and there are no fees that they charge for checking or going inside the branch and dealing with them face to face.

Wells Fargo's exposure in subprime scares me.

BOA giving credit to illegals and their $2billion to CountryFried scares me.

Maybe Union Bank of California for me. Did some digging and they never did any subprime. Will have to see about their prime lending habits..

I agree with mediaboyz. OCTFCU is tops. I have 2 car loans with them at 4 3/4 fixed. They are very internet accessible and are convenient if you live in the OC

It also mentions how they're closing some smaller home loan offices around the county including Santa Ana, South Coast Metro, Laguna Niguel and Corona del Mar.
