California panel urges 'immediate action' to protect from rising sea levels

Global warming is projected to cause ocean levels to rise 55 inches or more by the end of the century. Report recommends phased abandonment of coastal areas and moving state infrastructure inland.

interestingly, global warming isn't going to have much effect at all for CM, NPB, LB, etc the current 100yr flood plain isn't expanded much at all (mostly just balboa penn)

92646 and 92469, however, are literally underwater. I hadn't realized how extensive the current 100yr flood plain affects these two zips. global warming only fills it out a bit more.

I would guess from the maps that if you live in these zips, you would be required to carry flood insurance. Does anyone know?

I would also guess that these 3 areas are the prime locals for earthquake induced liquefaction, and you would want to carry earthquake insurance if you owned in these areas, no?

(edit: byebye brightwater in huntington beach!)

I can't help it when I read this I visualized this:

Edit - I love that I was able to find the exact image that popped into my head. I'm making this my new avatar!

I really don't want to admit how old I am, but when I was in elementary school, each year the teachers drilled into us that the "big one" was to hit by the time I finished high school and all of Lido Island and Corona del Mar would be under water. Needless to say, they were wrong.

Wow. Can you tell us which high school it was?

this was in elementary school (in irvine). maybe my memory fails me (meaning I'm exaggerating) but I remember being pretty frightened anytime the earth moved. I think all of UCI was supposed to be underwater due to the tsunami by now.
