The the last 2 years have been easy because Halloween fell on the weekend... so we usually hit Spectrum during the day and South Coast at night... but since the kids will be in school... probably can't do the Spectrum thing.

What are you planning to do this year?

We go trick/treating around the neighborhood.  We usually run into a bunch of our neighbors.  We'll do that this year.  The wife is trying to make their costumes this year.

My kid gets scared at night with all the kids in costumes... he feels safer in a lighted mall.

We did that when he was two... the next year he didn't want to do Halloween anymore... we just started getting him back into trick or treating these last 2 years... so we are trying not to traumatize him... he doesn't even like going to Halloween stores to look for costumes.

Go trick or treating in Irvine's El Camino community for ultimate horror. Old cars and rusty RVs parked on the sideyards sent shiver up my spine.

Happy Halloween everyone!!

Just a question for the TIers, were there a lot of kids trick or treating in your neighborhood for the past year(s)?  Which neighborhood are you in?  This is my first year in Irvine and don't know how much candy would be needed.

Depends on where you are and how your 'hood is laid out.

My current home, nobody comes by... this year we aren't even going to bother buying candy because we end up returning it or it just sits for 6 months. The main reason is our 'hood is pretty isolated, even the kids on our street go somewhere else.

Previously though... when we were in Westpark II... we go through a few bags. But that's nothing compared to more dense and new areas... where you can hit quite a few houses in a short distance... those will probably have the most kids.

I think we going to go to a nearby 'hood and try the street trick/treat this year... if it doesn't work out... we'll drive to the mall.

Man... I knew this one area was the popular... but I had no idea how crowded it got until tonight. It was so crowded we couldn't even go in or find parking close by.

Just driving by, the entire street was filled with people, you couldn't even see down it... it was crazy. I think those houses are the ones who buy 50 lbs of candy because it seemed like everyone from Irvine was there.

Let me see if anyone can guess where it is.

I actually pre-scouted the area earlier today to see if my youngest could handle it but as we drove through the area, he kept saying "I just want to go to the mall"... the older one however was gung-ho.

So when it got dark and we were finally set to go, we drove around and found a quieter neighborhood just for the older one to experience the street trick or treating (plus she prefers it from previous years) teling the younger we would still go to the mall. After a while, the younger one decided to get out of the car and brave it and so we spent an hour going down several streets and ended up not going to the mall. There were a few scary houses but they survived and it was a pretty good time.

It's funny how some houses have zero decorations but the most friendly people giving out tons of candy... and some that have great Halloween stuff out but they are not home (they are probably at that "happening" place).

So it looks like we broke the mall streak... as long as the hood we find isn't too outrageous. Hope everyone had a safe and fun Halloween... need to go through the bags and pick out the "bad" candy... hehe.

Westpark?  i know my co-worker does a massive haunted house thing and he tells me everyone in his street gets involved...

Woodbridge.  It was pretty cool there last nite.  After passing out candy to about 3 kids that came by our house, the wifey and I tandem biked to the woodbridge area.  Man, some of the houses there were decked out.  I wonder how it's going to be for Xmas.  :D

It was a particular tract in Woodbridge. Bonus points to who can name it.

It was totally packed... we drove to a different one that hardly had anyone but it was good enough for the kids.

Had about 100+ kids come through. Blew through 8 or so bags of candy.

This year I made a home brewed "Bender" Costume and followed Soylent Yellow around the 'hood. She raked in the candy, along with her friends while I stood back far enough for them to enjoy Trick or Treating while still being shepherded by a giant cigar chomping robot. Two memorable things happened last night:

1) As Soylent Yellow was getting candy at the door of some house, the lady behind the screen yelled out to me "Hey, are you trick or treating too?". I said (in my best Bender voice) "Yeah... Got any liquor?" The homeowner went inside, got a bottle of Merlot, and gave it to me. It's a crap bottle, but free wine never tastes bad.

2) As we're heading back to Planet Express, some kid across the street yells "Hey Bender, what do you do?" Of course I answer "Hey, I'm a Bender. I bend things". The kid pauses and yells again. "So what else do you do?". My answer: "I drink alot".  Without hesitation, the kid yells back " Yeah, Just like my Dad".

I laughed at first, then it caught up to me. Either that kid's got the sharpest wit in the neighborhood, or so real problems at home.

My .02c

If you ever decide to get out of lending... you may want to look into opening a "Soylent Green Is Costumes" store.
