Does anyone have any experience with the TUSD English Language Mainstream (ELM) program? Our 4 year old will be enrolling to TK this fall and she took her language placement test and fell into the intermediate rank. Apparently she will be assigned to the English Language Mainstream (ELM) program but parents can waive the decision and have her put back into the district's general program.

We are leaning towards waiving and just having her be with the main class but also thinking if the ELM will help her advance in reading/writing then maybe we should leave her in it. Any have any similar experiences they can share?

thanks

I can't address ELM, however wanted to make sure you're aware that TUSD's transitional kindergarten grade path is TK then first grade skipping traditional kindergarten and not TK to kindergarten to first that many think.

I am also not aware about the ELM, but may I ask where you found this to be true about TK to 1st? As far as I know of, from knowing 6 kids that have gone to TK in TUSD, then went on to kindergarten at their regular home school, the TK path is the first year of a 2-year kindergarten program. I'm sure people can protest & ask to be tested to 1st grade after TK, but this is certainly not the norm as far as what I have heard from friends.

thanks for any info.

I am in the same boat as you. I messed up and put english as a second language at home for my daughter. She scored a level 1 so she will be placed in a SEI program (Structured English Immersion). She just started TK @ Peters Canyon on Tuesday and I am on the fence about bumping her up to ELM. Let me know what you end up doing.

We ended up not having to do anything since her TK school (Benson elementary) did not offer any ELM class and has just one TK class. So far she has been enjoying school and looks forward to going to school everyday. Guess TK is mostly play so the kids love it  ;)
