Fun. I made reservations here the weekend before last to surprise Mr. SoCal for his birthday. As many here probably already know, it's an old haunt among OC'ers going back 40 years.
We were seated next to General "Bill" Lyon & party -- yes, that Lyon. I asked to be re-seated, though, so I can't comment more than that. Autographed pics of Richard Nixon, local newscasters, and sports figures on the walls as well who enjoy the restaurant.
Neckties plastered all over the walls and ceiling. Trees growing through the middle of the restaurant. But I like the country drive the best. Oak trees hundreds of years old creating a canopy over the road. The only downside to that is making sure you limit your beers before heading home so you can handle the twists and turns.
The food was... alright. Not the best I ever had, not the worst. I had the filet mignon, shrimp skewers, loaded baked potato, salad, and bread (I was hungry, okay?!) The shrimp were overcooked pencil erasers. The filet was tender but lacked flavor despite being cooked over a live mesquite fire with the rest of the food. The salad was not good and the bread was boring.... didn't really touch those. The potato was actually my favorite. I like how they serve a trio of generous toppings in a separate carry-all. I like my potato to do the back-stroke in a sea of butter, sour cream and onions. Not a problem at this place. My margarita was nice and stiff, just the way I like it! They served a sundae as well for the birthday. They have really good ice cream. I'm not a huge ice cream fan but we both remarked it was good.
Mandatory valet. Don't wear heels. It's an all gravel parking lot / entrance.
