The Silicon Valley Suicides

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
Think this kind of pressure isn't here in the OC? As a parent of two HS teens who have told me of similar tales in this article, my advice is "Think again".

The Silicon Valley is the territory I know best. The majority of my designs are in the silicon valley and Homes are being sold to many families like the ones mentioned in the article. The competition is not only fierce and there is a high level of entitlement as well. Stanford and its rival Berkeley are practically in the backyard therefore over achievers with high SAT and GPA were expected to get accepted. Unfortunately the high scholastic merit is only weighted about 1/2 in the admission process while the rest is through interview and personal statement. Families pay over $2m or $900/sf for a new home just to be in the good school district. Typically among the 20+ students accepted each year to Stanford from the local schools some were just average scholastic achievers. The rejected high achievers who ended their life past years were not prepared to deal with this type of rejection when their entire life were nothing but successes. The local blog similar to TI mentioned this extensively.

After reading this, Irvine schools don't sound so bad after all.  Feel sorry for Homer's kids, though.

The Silicon Valley Suicides:  Why are so many kids with bright prospects killing themselves in Palo Alto?

Please don't feel sorry for my kids.  I'm probably the most laid back parent about education as I know how tough it was growing up with parent's that applied tremendous pressure on me to succeed.  I thank them for it now but my childhood was short of anything fun.

I do not want to replicate what I went through for my children.  I'm just going to provide them with a great solid foundation, a good school district and see where it leads them.  I'm hoping Stanford for my son and daughter to keep my legacy going.  I hope my endowments are enough to warrant their admissions  :P

At least Saratoga is a bit less competitive than Cupertino, Los Altos, or Paly Unified.  Maybe these tiger parents will eventually realize that Stanford isn't the end all, be all.  They merely need to look at all the FCB's from bumfuck China who didn't even graduate from college, yet live in bigger houses and drive nicer cars than them.
