Cross post alert. Also in Economy.

Just saw this on Channel 7. <a href="http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/story?section=news/business&id=6403770">TIC lays off 100.</a>

IAC stands for "Irvine Company Apartment Communities," which is a division of TIC - "The Irvine Company." I believe the layoffs are occurring more on the land development end of TIC and not the IAC wing. Either way, you know times are rough when a company as seemingly stable and unencumbered by debt as TIC begins layoffs.

They were late to the layoff game in the 90s too...

<em>Irvine Co. joins layoff trend

January 23, 1992

Byline: Mark Veverka; Andre Mouchard

The Orange County Register

The Irvine Co. laid off nearly one-sixth of its staff Wednesday, citing dismal land sales and unrelentingly tight lending policies by banks. Staff reductions have been commonplace among many major real estate concerns over the past two years, and the Irvine Co. has not been immune. Wednesday's layoffs of 60 employees marked the company's second round of cutbacks in 14 months. The developer released 40 employees on Nov. 7, 1990.</em>

Someone I know quit her job at Wells Fargo in May to work for the Irvine Co. because working in Newport Beach sounds so much nicer than in Santa Ana. She has a feeling that her name will be on the list. Should I feel sorry for her? hmmm... :-/

Allison,

Are you kidding me? She left because of the city name? Not because it might be a better move or better paid? WOW....Amazing.

Well, I married my wife just because of her last name, which I use all the time. It feels good whenever people call me "Mr. Cheng."</blockquote>

So what was your name prior to marriage? Something really embarrassing?

[quote author="Astute Observer" date=1222136198]Just a regular last name. I was just poking fun at Allison's friend.</blockquote>

LOL! She actually did take a slight pay cut so she can brag about eating at California Pizza Kitchen at Fashion Island with an ocean view, instead of eating at CPK at Main Place Santa Ana with a parking lot view. And she also bought a (I mean, forced her husband to buy her a) $18K solitaire diamond ring to "celebrate" her new job.

BTW, she is someone I know, not qualified to be Allison's friend, haha.

I just feel sorry for anyone who has lost or about to lose their Jobs...it can destroy the Family plus it doesn't do anyone any good, the collateral effect is bad for all of us..

My Wife has kinda been in a similar position in a round about way for the last few months and we found that right now, you need a BSc. be able to type 7000 wpm, and generally do the job of 3 People for the princely sum of around $12 ph. OH, and you have to be bi-lingual too! If you're not b-lingual your resume' is headed for the shredder..

She doesn't HAVE to work at all financially (no, we're not independently wealthy) but after a few months she was getting pretty depressed because she felt as though she was unproductive and simply needs a job to go to every Day....

I know we've mentioned this before, but is there some kind of Job networking sticky we could come up with to help? Every little bit we can do can only be for the good, right?

BTW, my Wife found a job that she loves so I'm not suggesting this for my own selfish reasons..

if she can afford an 18k diamond ring or her husband can.... why is she even working? i am sure the husband makes more then enough to support them.

I knew she isn't your friend Allison because we don't make fun of Friends, we do all we can to help them, right?

jbatzmaru, I don't know their exact income, but I have a pretty good guess. ;-) My bet is the good old Mastercard does come in handy. :cheese:
