Synthetic Turf

Hello folks - have any of you installed synthetic turf in your backyard? If so can you please share your experiences. We are interested in it but read about the potential damage caused by light reflection from windows. I saw a few pictures online where the turf got melted on areas where the sun light reflected from window glasses. Appreciate your responses.

Thanks in advance.

Correct, you need to make sure the sun doesn't reflect off your windows to the turf.  A few residents in my area have this issue and have not been able to rectify it because of the HOA rules.  Many $$$$$ down the drain with repairs.

We have a small patch that I installed under the kid's sand box.

I'm not a fan it's better than the cheesy 1970s patio "grass" outdoor carpet, but only marginally.

Major complaints, it gets hot, even though it's shaded, it still heats up, much like concrete.  It's semi-permeable, water will soak through, but sand, little leaves, etc, get down in it and compact. Raking on it is a fantasy. Leaf blowing is a waste of time for anyone at isnt on the surface.  Traffic will mat it and it really looks plastic when matted down. It's much like having shag carpet with junk ground in.  And the biggy, it feels like cr*p underfoot. Concrete and pavers feels like concrete and pavers.  Wood chip mulch feels like mulch.  Grass feels like grass.  Artificial turf, feels like a walking on a plastic bag with grit in it with the added bonus of your feet get dirtier than pavers or good healthy real turf.

Hate the stuff.  It should be the winner of things that sound good but aren't award.

I'm thinking of pulling it out and replacing with playground mulch.

I think it depends who installs / preps your turf and which product they use.  I've had my turf for about 1 year now, and I have a *lot* of it (probably 900-1000 sq ft), and I haven't had any issues.  I do see (if I'm being picky) maybe a small number of blades have faded but you really have to be on  the ground looking for this.

Nothing melted through the hot summer, and after about 6 months it sticks up fine and doesn't matte anymore.  I have dark green turf with brown thatch and I get comments all the time on how real it looks.

Thanks @aquabliss. Our HOA (Stonegate) pre-approves the following brands of synthetic turf.

a) Boone Action Turf
b) Pro Green Synthetic Grass
c) Tiger Turf

Do you mind sharing the name of the synthetic turf you have installed and the installer name.
Appreciate your response.

Hi NewHO, I actually don't know the turf manufacturer but it was offered as the "standard turf" by my landscaper, Savannascapes (www.savannascapes.com).

I actually drove to Anaheim's Synthetic Turf Warehouse and got a big box of 25 different turf samples.  I compared them for weeks in all kinds of light (Tiger Turf, Pro Green, etc.)

Time and time again I kept coming back to Savannascapes standard turf offering as the best looking, most realistic, and best pyle.  Even over and above those that cost 3 to 4 times as much.

I have the same comments as you. I know there is real cheap product, but the nice stuff is really nice. Play soccer on it barefoot with my daughter all the time and never have any issues with it or the feel of it.  I have similar colored turf as you.

I have Tiger Turf.  Diamond Pro of some sort (going off memory here). Was from Synthetic Grass Warehouse. Below is who I used. My project wasn't huge, but the crew was professional and after the rains, etc, have not had any issues with drainage, etc.

I don't do yard work so now my yard has some nice green to it without having to do any actual work (which is awesome). I have raked leaves on it and haven't had the isuses described above with it (but maybe I'm just less picky?).

Here's mine (took this morning).  Been installed about a year and still looks just as good as the day it was put in.

Vow, I am impressed.  You might have mentioned it before but how much did it cost per square feet for that turf?

Also your landscaping looks impressive too.  Did you get the fire place also done?

Why no bones, it's actually turf which has been synthetically created.

How dare you accuse me of buying planters from Costco.  They are clearly of a higher grade:http://www.crateandbarrel.com/tidore-tall-27.5-planter/s572586
:)

I said cost. Not Costco. Now if it was ps9 posting, then I would guess Costco or target.

Now I need to get my drone up over the neighborhood so I can figure out where you live.

Thx.  I think it was $9 per sq. ft installed.  Yes I also have a ginormous fireplace which was way too expensive but has 10ft of flame :)
