STAR results 2012

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
Got ours.

This is new for us as I guess private school doesn't do this testing.

So from the way I read it, we can use these results to show our kid is qualified for APAAS... but for GATE they have to take the OLSAT?

Lucky! Irvine got their early last year too. How did the kids do? Their first year in public?
Yes, GATE is OLSAT based, and nothing to do with STAR. No APAAS for TUSD children!

Surprisingly... our oldest was advanced in both English and Math.

I say "surprisingly" because she doesn't like math. I'm also surprised because I don't really push academics ("Get an A or you're grounded!" or "Kumon kumon kumon!") and we didn't have her take the OLSAT because she doesn't like this whole testing thing.

So I guess she had a good teacher and maybe some good genes from her father (momma IHO doesn't read TI). :)

You know IHO, they go from 0-90 based on what they learn in school, and 90-100 with that extra push. So far even I have not bothered with that extra push. No workbooks, no textbooks to master during the summer. I was a bit surprised when everybody said they have a set of textbooks at home. Not that they can sit and watch TV all day, but I let them explore other things like art, music, reading.. and play time. Come high school I will move to the other camp I think though.

I am meeting Mrs.IHO without LV purse for coffee later today. I will make sure to mention this comment. Don't worry.

Anyone in TUSD got theirs in the mail? I checked the state website, they have updated the general scores. Tried advanced searches like "gate" "ethnicity" "parent education", but no definitive answer :-)

Got ours today. I had forgotten all about them.

3rd Grade. English-Language Arts: 530. Math: 486. In 7out of the 10 tested categories, he got perfect 100% scores... at a non-Irvine school - impossible!  ;) Can't complain.

I was surprised with the results since he's usually stronger in Math than L.A. Got a perfect score in 4 out of the 5 categories in L.A. I even checked the envelope and papers twice to be sure they got the right kid. Just when you think you know your kid... hmm.

Congratulations mommy :-) Mine is a little over confident about math- I am trying to prepare her for a not so perfect grade, but she insists. I will buy a tub of something nice and cold just in case. Will update when we get ours.

Just checked Aeries portal, and got the scores only. Baby got a clean 600 on Math :-)
L.A. is advanced range too, but not a clean sweep and I know what the issue there is- reading comprehension. Some of the answers that she gives are totally different from the ones expected. Happened during class tests too.

Yes SoCal, just when you think you know your kid!

LOL. Same here with reading comprehension. Even at the end of the year on homework, I would see him give goofy answers that don't make any sense. That's why I'm baffled how he got a hundred percent on it. His lowest scoring area was Statistics, Data Analysis, and Probability. I see that we can get sample questions at www.starsamplequestions.org . I plan to look them up and go over it.

Didn't R1's grade level also test Written Comp and Science? I have a gut feeling Written Comp is an inherited strength.

LOL. Earlier I had said he does the worst on the Statistics portion. He "only" scored 80%. I just noticed he got 4 questions right. That means there are only 5 on the test... which means he missed a grand total of: 1.  ::)

Oops! Here I was concerned he doesn't understand the subject. Don't do like me and read too quickly through the results. It's important to take into account how many questions there are! Scoring 80% can be something or it can mean nothing.

I was just talking to my sister this morning and she had mentioned that my nephew had gotten a perfect 600 on his math and high 500s on his English. I would not have known what the heck she was talking about if not for this thread.

Here is a better frame of reference for the yet-to-be parents. This is an example taken from 3rd Grade only. Hope this helps:

Scale Scores and Performance Levels

English-Language Arts

Advanced: 402 - 600

Proficient: 350 - 401

Basic: 300 - 349

Below Basic: 259 - 299

Far Below Basic: 150 - 258

----------------------------------------
Mathematics

Advanced: 414 - 600

Proficient: 350 - 413

Basic: 300 - 349

Below Basic: 236 - 299

Far Below Basic: 150 - 235

-----------------------------------------------------

The California Standards Tests (CST) assesses:

English and Math for grades 2-11
Written  Comp for grades 4 & 7
History for grades 8-11
Science for grades 5 and 8-11

**Scores are limited to comparison only within the same grade and subject. More info here:http://star.cde.ca.gov/star2012/help_comparescores.aspx

The test components also vary depending on the student within the grade and subject. Modified assessments for special needs kids and tests in Spanish may be given.

I do not know if the performance levels from grade-to-grade. Anyone know?? Example: 350 is the lowest proficient score in 3rd grade Math. Is it the same for 6th grade math? Don't know.

Nice! What grade is he in? OC Register ran an article saying lot of kids did well on Math.

SoCal- good info on the performance level. I think it was the same till fifth grade. We are STILL waiting for ours in the mail :-( At least now we know the scores, but this is too much- kids start school tomorrow, and we haven't received the previous year's score card.

not sure what grade he is in, he is 11, so i think that is what the 6th grade? he has gotten a perfect math score for the third straight year now. but if there is only like 5 questions like SOCAL said, that doesnt seem very impressive to me.  he is pretty smart though, you can tell from talking to him.  Ill give him his due when he gets in and graduates from SC and makes his first 100K.

Haha! No, he answered at least 65 questions. SoCal was talking about the module that Jr.SoCal missed one on.
There is a raw score that tells how many answers they got right in all.
