I like the look of a smooth stucco or smooth plaster retaining wall with a stain to match the exterior of the house. Will this finish hold up against pressure on the wall?

I have 500 lineal feet of my property block wall done in Venetian smooth plaster. It patinas beautifully.

Is your wall a retaining wall though? Just wondering if all this pressure and water runoff is going to cause cracking issues with the stucco.

I agree with the contractor that for a retaining wall, you'll likely get buckling from a retaining wall that size. Soil (esp. topsoil) has a surprising amount of movement to it, swelling and shrinking, expanding and contracting due to water, temperature and organics.

While I like the look of the smooth stucco, as well, I think you'd be best served to go with more conventional solutions.

I have a similar situation and we allow some of our vines to provide cover.

Most landscapers are saying it won't be an issue if you do it right. The proper way is to water proof the rear, french drain the back, gravel, w/ an engineer and city permit.
