So we finally got around to going here... we tried last Sunday but they were still doing private events (I think it was a Yelp event).

Slaters 50/50
24356 Swartz Ave
Lake Forest, CA 92630
(949) 460-9314http://www.slaters5050.com

Yelp:http://www.yelp.com/biz/slaters-50-50-lake-forest

We tried last night at around 8:30 but the wait was an hour and a half just for 2 people... today (Saturday) we went there at about 1:30 and it was half an hour wait for a party of 4. Very crowded and stuffy.

We were seated at the high tables which I don't recommend because the wooden seats are not comfortable.

The menu is simple but they just don't have the 50/50 burgers (for those who don't know, their signature burger patty is 50% beef and 50% bacon)... they also have salads, different types of mac&cheese, chicken sandwiches, pastrami and even  chicken and pancakes.

Since it was our first time there, we went for the 50/50 burger... nothing fancy cheddar and regular toppings but they have tons of others. We also tried their appetizer combos which is reasonable because you can pick 2, 3 or up to 6 and the prices start at $6.50 (we had the onion rings and fried mac/bacon/cheese balls). We also did the Beer Cheese Chili fries but asked for the cheese sauce on the side because it would have been to soggy. For dessert, we had the Coconut thing (forgot the name) but it's basically like a coconut caramel pazookie. It had too much coconut for me.

The number of toppings and ways to have their burgers are interesting, they have something caled the Peanut Butter & Jellousy:

(from Yelp)

It was special Burger of the Month, with peanut butter and strawberry jelly,  but got so popular they added it to their menu.

As for our burger, the 50/50 patty is salty because of the bacon but it's a good flavor. We did the white brioche bun which was good and they have like 5 or 6 others.

The pricing was reasonable, $9 for their smallest burger (1/3 lb AFTER cooking) and I liked their menu compared to The Counter. They have tons of beers on tap (PS9!) and it actually feels more like a sports bar atmosphere (TVs everywhere).

They do have kids menus (starting at $5 including drink) and it's the standard, sliders., mac&cheese, PB&J or chicken fingers.

There is plenty of parking but the location is hard to get out of because it's on El Toro between Rockfield and the 5.

I would suggest going doing their slow times (when we left at 3pm there was almost no wait) but it's something you should try once.  If they had a 50/50 in Irvine, it would probably go in our regular rotation (instead of Islands or any other burger places).

Last time I was there (different location), their burger of the month was some crazy 50 alarm burger with all kinds of spicy peppers (fire chili, habaneros, jalape?os, etc), waitress warned me, but stupidly I ordered anyway.  Too damn hot.  All I could taste was heat.  I wasn't right for a day.  Definitely don't recommend that burger if it ever comes back on their rotation.

I think Slaters is just ok.  Better than the counter, but different vibe.  Sports bar is a good analogy.

Is it all bar seating height?  Any regular tables?  Or are those hard to come by?  I hate dangling legs.

There are regular height tables... it's about 40% bar height (if you include the bar). The problem is the seats are wood and a bit short, so if you have longer legs, the middle of your thigh is on the corner and gets uncomfortable.

The Sizzler, for example, has seating with bar height chairs but it's a padded seat so it's fine.

We ate here for the first time today. I read Iho's review before I went and gave it a go... I was looking forward to it. Their menu looked interesting.

This place was horrendous!! What a wreck.  :(  :(  :'( One of the worst dining experiences I've ever had.

Everything from the location / the headache of getting there & finding it to the very, VERY poor, rude service of our waitress to the gimmicky food with obscenely large portions / congealed fat to the loud atmosphere to the filthy bathrooms. I feel like throwing up.

Heh... my wife must agree with SoCal because we haven't been back since the first time.

It's a qwerter kind of place.

EDIT: Heh... I guess it is.

what did you try?

I ordered the chicken & pancakes (w/ bacon... & egg... & gravy... & syrup... &... OMG!!) I barely touched 1/5 of it before I got queasy. It's a giant mountain of food. Two pancakes on the bottom. Fried chicken, white gravy, egg sunny-side up in the center. Another flapjack on top. A river of syrup spilling off the plate. They stuck a sacrificial knife in it like they do the burgers. I knew it was a mistake the second I saw it. I looked at their online photo first and it looked nothing like this so I thought I was safe. I also ordered their "Ginger Beer". What a waste of $4 that was. A fistful of ginger chunks floating in ginger ale. I only took two swigs but my throat burned the rest of the time there and had me sounding like a four-pack-a-day-smoker.

Mr. SoCal ordered their Fritos & Chili burger. My big boy ordered the old time burger. My dh & my B.B. shared their fries (with bacon ketchup and bacon salt.) My little boy ordered the 50/50 sliders off the kid's menu. Mr. SoCal said his burger was just average - nothing special compared to what he gets at home. (He says I've ruined him.) My B.B. said his was just okay. My L.B. only ate half of one slider and said he was full which was weird but I felt the same after a few bites. I think it's just so fat-laden that you just fill up so quickly. They thought the bacon ketchup was weird. Mr. SoCal likes wispy-thin shoestring fries and wasn't really a fan of their thick steak fries. We had planned to order a dessert before we got there. But that was definitely a no-go by the end of it. It was just the food - it was the service.

I was there around 2 p.m. on Sunday. It was a little busy but not packed. A 10 min. wait for a table. 10 min to order a drink. She wouldn't take our order when she delivered the drinks. We began stating our orders and she just turned her back & walked away. Another 20 min until we saw her again. Placed our order. I asked her a question about the item. She completely ignored the question and was like, "Ok - anybody else want to order?" Wow, so rude. 30 min for meals to arrive (by someone else). Our glasses sat empty. She never offered refills except at the end only to my husband who had a beer. We thought that was weird - why only offer him a refill? To boost the check / her tip? The only difference between his drink and ours were the cost. She walked by our table 6 times. No eye contact. She acted like we didn't exist. I kept saying, "Excuse me..."... "Hi..." Nothing. Had to ask the server for help clearing plates / getting drinks which that person did. Finally she gave me a drink and just slammed it down next to my arm and walked away. She did the same thing to a table next to us with a to-go box except everyone at that table was deaf. Obviously the deaf girl didn't hear her say the box was there and she had her head turned away so she couldn't see the waitress. The waitress shoved the box into her arm. Then I saw the women's reactions after she walked away - they were signing to each other about it. They didn't look too pleased at all.

That experience would qualify for my "belly full of anger" award.  Did you have a nice chat with the manager?

Yes, I contacted management. They apologized & said they'll train the waitress. Slater's also offered my family a free trip on the house. I declined the offer. It wasn't just the service but the location and the food as well. I'd rather pay for a good experience somewhere else.

Not sure if this was posted anywhere and instead of the Retail Closing/Opening thread I'll just post it here.

Sorry USC and qwerger, the Lake Forest location closed in September.

Just noticed in today when we went to Big 5.

i was supposed to go there the day after it closed for a meeting so had to go somewhere else :-(

Dang, I missed it. Was on my to do list. A trip up to HB is in order. For locals, I'd recommend Bru as an option. Had a very nice meal there this week and their burger was really top notch.
