I know many plants in China that have the factories on the bottom while the owners live up top.  It is common.  This guy just took it to an extreme, using the pillars as a seperator to his factory below.  The business/factories with the owners living upstairs do quite well as they are always at work.

Yeah, but those aren't motorcourt homes...those are alley loaded detached condos.

Are you talking about the Tall Oak ones?  Hmmm, I guess they kinda are motorcourt homes.

I love the idea of 3 stories, but having a BR on bottom floor is deal breaker, and every 3br condo has one on the bottom floor.

I was always wondering why more homes in CA don't have these (unless they are in a hillside).  Basements are a way of life on the east coast and midwest!

Unfortunately, i had to build my sports / movie refuge outside, but other than not having a bathroom, i have everything out there that i would have had in the basement... plus its further away from everyone else  8)

My guess is that the high amount of seismic activity, coupled with the soil types we commonly have here makes the option less desireable.

My guess is cost. I presume tension slab foundations are much cheaper than buildings with basements.
