I have to give it up to you.

Being able to take care of kids without another adult to back you up or to talk to or just to keep you company when the kids are asleep is quite a task.

Not something I could do for an extended period of time and so kudos to you for having more strength than I.

Well, there is one "advantage" they have which I never really thought about until watching about a million seasons of my guilty pleasure, "Teen Mom 2" and also talking to my son's 1st grade teacher who is a single mom ... and that is that they get a lot of kid-free time, way more than married parents, to go do whatever they want if the other parent shares custody or gets visitation. For example, let's say the mother has primary custody, typically the father will get the kids like every-other weekend plus summers and holidays. Yes, it's a huge responsibility because when you're on, you're ON, but when downtime comes, there's that. That is a lot of free time. She travels, dates, has spa get-aways with friends...

I guess I was referring to single parents where the spouse has passed away.

That's what I mean by no backup, no one to help, just you... all day, every day.

I agree! Once a year I spend two weeks with kids and here is how it goes.. first two days I have everything in control. After that slowly things go out of control.. one has missing assignments, one has missing uniform pieces, laundry is overflowing, no food in the kitchen.. and they always manage to fall sick, or get hurt, and I always end up working more than anticipated.. by the time his plane lands, we go to the airport as needy wife and children. I say never again, but come next year I am ready for the whole game..

It's hard to parent alone. You need two. If grandparents are also available as back up.. even better!

I completely agree.  Single parents are impressive.

From my own experience with single parents, they rely heavily on family and/or friends.  I think many single parents move close to family.
