Shady Canyon Coyotes Killing Pets?

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
I just remembered that a few weeks ago, while I was outside of my inlaws having a stoge, I heard a not too distant barking. Then the barking turned to yelping then outright cries then silence. I'm assuming that it was a coyote tearing up a family pet.

Now just a few days ago, I was outside in the courtyard and heard another dog barking and going through the same agonizing thing that I heard that last dog go through.

Has anyone heard of any reports about pets getting killed?

I'm sure it's a definite possibility. I grew up in Yorba Linda and have lost two cats to coyotes. Many of my neighbors did too. But they seem to come out more at night and early in the morning. When I was a school-kid, our school crossing-guard started his shift early before the kids showed up (before 7 a.m.) and always brought some type of gun because of the coyotes. One morning a coyote was in front of the school walking towards the school yard - he shot and killed it. It's been quite a big problem up there and I'm sure in other parts of O.C. as well where you are backed up to undeveloped areas.

Sorry about your cats... Yeah, it was really unpleasant to hear that. I don't remember coyotes being agile. Many of the houses that I've seen have metal fences around their property. It scares me to think if my kid's playing in the back yard then all of the sudden a Wile comes out of nowhere... How scary.

Btw, both occurrences were in the evening.

There are no outdoor cats where we live. At least not for more than one evening.

Our dog, 65lb. English Bulldog, was attacked by a Mountain Lion. He is ok and ended up with three puncture wounds on the sides of his neck. His neck is 7" to 8" in diameter. If our girls want to play in the backyard in the summer, one of us has to go out with.

Mountain lions tend to stick to less populated areas and are solitary hunters. Coyotes are pack or pair hunters, have a nightly range of 2-3 miles, are capable of digging *under* fences, will trail their prey for hours if need be, and can hide very well in suburban neighborhoods. They are the most widespread predator in the US and trive in areas where human live because we wipe out their natural competition. A mountain lion will lie in wait for it's victims, but coyotes will roam for miles looking for food. Fortunately, they tend to be afraid of humans naturally... except in areas where do-gooder types try to feed them out of some misguided thinking that they are helping the animal.

The fires probably pushed a pack or two into the area searching for small rodents and other food. Chase them and they will run away for a few minutes. Shoot them with rock salt pellets and they will run away for good.

Now, Effie... how could you say that? ;-)

yes a buddy wanted to borrow one of my rifles. I explained i don't have anything small for that.... Maybe a .22.

The mosins are WAY too much and have overpenetration issues

The Bohica .510 is WAY WAY overkill

The Ruger is a buffalo rifle, for large and deadily game

and the Rominian PSL is a sniper rifle along the lines of the Mosins.

heck even a 9mm would probably get you in trouble with the police....

anyways good luck.

Sawweett!

When I lived in New Mexico I used an old WWII battle rifle and a shot gun for the coyotes that were harassing the cattle (at a dairy farm I worked at). California is so different. I helped a friend by developing a long range paintball rifle. It would eventually be used as a paintball sniper rifle. The coyotes wouldent like it and we be annoyed, but eventually come back if they got hungry enough.

Long range for paint balls is something like 25-30 yards max (I have done some 140ft shots though). Sorry... but you really need to get a good spin as well as custom ball. I would sand the balls down to get a nice round ball that would be consistent. Almost like match grade ammo... Since the spin was quite alot, I even had to put some light weight fiberglass and epoxy to strengthen the shell. I was accelerating them to 350+fps with a full pressure charge.
