Screwed On Performance Evaluation

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
What a monday, I just got rejected on a $25,000 pay increase. I am the first one in my department (engineering) to not receive this increase after their first evaluation. Mind you this eval was supposed to happen last year, but was 11 months late so its just happening now. I was informed that the raise carried a new prereq this year, which is needing to have people underneath you that you manage. However, all the people in my department currently do not manage anyone, and there are no future plans to make us managers. The new policy is that all the people currently on the upper pay scale are just grandfathered in, so good for them. In all honesty, I outperformed everyone in my department by most of the objective measures. I feel sooo boned. I imagine other companies are implementing irrational unfair policies to save money as well right now. I suppose its better than getting canned.

Can't work right now so I thought I'd try venting....

hmmm, didnt do the trick, still cant work...

well, if you really did outperform everyone in your dept, then your manager should stick up for you and get you that raise. or it should be easy for you to go to a competitor, no?

The good news is that my manager(director of engineering) is sticking up for me, taking the issue even to the pres. However, he up against the VP of HR/Finance (talk about moral hazard, our HR VP is also our finance VP). The VP outranks him and my boss admits my chances are low.

And I finished polishing up the resume, once this issue is finalized I'll shotgun it out there. Everyone at my office will know I'm going to interviews though once I get a haircut.

Been there, done that, got the T-shirt 3 or 4 times. I say you start working to the level of your coworkers. If it doesn't go through, politely tell your manager thank you for his help and never mention it again. I used to get upset at all the favoritetism, the big boss sticking up for this cronies/lackies and you getting stuck with ALOT of work. I say no hard feeling and vote with your feet.

Even if you go to a competitor they will know they are so screwed because they wasted alot of time effort training you and getting you up to speed.

good luck and take it easy

I second what biscuitninja said. Work appropriate to compensation of anyone else of your level. You're not getting compensated to do anymore than that, and it doesn't sound optimistic.

I'd start looking right away. Replacing someone who can feasibly ask for a $25k raise isn't going to be cheap for them.

Wow, don't come to my company. I've led as many as 10 but have never heard of a $25k raise. You almost have to walk on water just to get 5% at my company. Salary is a key part of HR's function, so I don't know if it matters that the HR person is also a finance exec. It does sound like you got screwed, relatively speaking. The hardest part of a negotiation is usually guessing what kind of hand your opponent is playing with. You might be worth a $25k raise but you probably won't find out until after you've given 2 weeks' notice.

Daedalus,

yep, I know the feeling, i work for your company at one time or another. I think the worst company i've worked for is Raytheon. I could probably write a huge book on the crap that goes on.... But suffice to say, i'll go back... with a contract of +30%, with a 2 year minimum contract, with a signing bonus and a break contract penality fee. Otherwise, i'll politely decline.

Anyways good luck

I got $2.2k...

The thing is neither me nor anyone in my department could fetch that $25k extra pay level anywhere else. So techincally I'm not worth it, it's just the double standard that pisses me off. In fact, if not for the fact that others in my department made so much more on less work I'd have no problems with this job. It's a good job for good pay otherwise.

[quote author="Astute Observer" date=1224629126]So you got upset over something that worths less than $1 per day?

I understand you, since I was haggling over something like $600 per year too, and loss two weeks of pay.

But I think I am going to vote your company to be the most desireable company to work for... the less your work, the more you pay. I bet they will need to double your pay to hire me!</blockquote>

It's a 2.2 not 22, thats a $22,800 difference

Last time I went through that crap I got a 0% raise... yes you read that right. Essentially they waited a year and 10 months to give me a raise and it was 0%. Because they were going through layoffs. But the boss got a 11% raise....

I immediately went home and started working a STRICT 40hrs.... I told them it was crap and I would NOT be working any excess hrs anymore.

I also got laid off next year... and had already planned for that. I came back at the customer liason and a engineer III (from engineer I) with a 100% raise.

good luck

Believe it or not I keep one just like that, in a case, at work, and take with me to meetings every now and then, depending on how I think the discussion might go.

I went to the Store the other Day and bought half a dozen assorted get well Cards which I placed open and upright on my Desk...

If my Boss ever walks into my Office I can always tell Him my Projects are behind because I haven't been feeling well lately...

Well, it probably would seem like a boring advice, but I'd look for another job that pays more, secure it, and then inform your current employer and let them counter. Either way, you are getting your raise, whether at this company or the other one. I was never getting good raises, but always increased my income by moving to other companies and getting higher-level positions.

I started with $9 per hour, then $15, then $22, $30, $50, and now I'm on a salary at a much higher rate. So, you might want to start looking for another job...

To me, these Days, the whole problem is that "Managers" - in most cases, incompetent People whom someone has helped get into that position- are looking up not down...
