Say goodbye to free parking at Aria, Bellagio and 10 other Las Vegas hotels

January 19, 2016

The cost for a visit to Sin City is about to climb for guests at MGM Resorts' 12 properties along the Strip. Within a few months, free parking will disappear ? and it?s unclear whether other Las Vegas hotels will follow suit.

Though hefty charges for self parking and valet are commonplace in most big cities, free-wheeling Las Vegas has been the notable exception, with countless millions of motorists having grown accustomed to the freebie.

No more.

MGM Resorts officials announced on Friday that, starting this spring, guests will have to ante up to park.

"The pricing is going to be modest. It will not exceed $10 a night for self parking," Clark Dumont, a senior vice president, said. He wouldn't say how much people can expect to pay for valet parking.

The charges will impact guests at Aria, Bellagio, Circus Circus, Delano, Excalibur, Luxor, MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay, the Mirage, Monte Carlo, New York-New York and Vdara.

The big unknown is whether other big players along the Strip will begin charging for parking now that MGM Resorts has opened the door.

The good news: The Venetian and the Palazzo ?have no plans to charge for parking,? according to Keith Salwoski, executive director of public relations.

The murkier news: Spokespersons for Caesars Entertainment ? which has 10 Vegas properties ? and Wynn-Encore declined to comment on the possibility of charging for parking.

MGM Resorts? Dumont said the new revenue will help create an improved parking experience.

For example, guests will be able to locate available spaces using their smartphones. The company will also build a new, 3,000-space garage at Excalibur, on the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana Avenue, to meet increasing demand.

Vegas visitor volume surpassed 42 million last year. The number of Californians crossing the state line along I-15 at Primm climbed nearly 5%.

?It?s a reality that we have to face,? Dumont said. ?Are people going to love it? No. But it is what it is.?

"Las Vegas' Mandalay Bay project is among the largest rooftop solar projects in the world."

"The PUC also on Wednesday approved modified orders allowing the Las Vegas Sands Corp., MGM Resorts International and Wynn Resorts to leave as customers of Nevada Power and secure their own energy supplies on the wholesale market. An issue over what energy supplies the companies could acquire if they leave was clarified, but the exit fees were left unchanged.

The fees approved by the commission total $86.9 million for MGM, $15.7 million for Wynn and $23.9 million for the Sands, plus recurring fees and charges to recover certain ongoing costs that cannot currently be quantified."

Just a guess, pass the fees on to the customers? The Nevada PUC ruling in a way makes the casinos mentioned above to buy electricity wholesale. There are costs associated with that.

So MGM is spending $36 million to upgrade existing parking lots. All I got to say if you can't afford $10, you shouldn't be going to a casino. Stay home and play video game poker and slots.  ;)

Boo.... On the positive side now I can convince people to valet instead of walking the 2.5 miles from self park lot to room all the while ingesting 2nd hand smoke.

Not likely.  They'll also be charging for valet as well.  Enjoy the walk ;)

The places that don't charge are going to be packed.  If I were a guest at the Venetian I'd be unhappy.

The government needs to step in and break up the MGM & Caesars monopoly on the LV strip.  Competition between the hotels would never have allowed this bullshit to happen.  Also looking at resort fees BS.

Teddy Roosevelt you're our only hope.

That's par for the course.  I've been to Vegas with friends who live in Newport and are very well off.  They'll lose $10k at the tables in an hour then we'll go to dinner and they'll complain about the $50 steak.

It's along the same lines of buying something online that costs $800 but contemplating for hours about the $5.99 shipping fee.

Heh... I just went through this recently.

Got so spoiled with free Prime shipping that I was hesitant in buying something on Amazon that cost $38 to ship (it was a $250 item).

But I'm a 99%er $1 blackjack player so I can complain. I'll wait for qwermazon to tape $40 up at the Greenwood residents only park.

Oh man. Amazon prime has spoiled me tons! No more are the days of UPS ground 5-7 day shipping. Rarely do I think about a few dollar purchase when it has free prime shipping.

I'm spoiled by the free same delivery.

Las Vegas Pay to Park

By KEN RITTER

Associated Press

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? The Las Vegas Strip casino company that announced last month it'll begin charging for parking said Tuesday it's handing the keys to the program to a Chicago-based firm.

SP Plus Corp. will handle paid parking at all non-union MGM Resorts International properties, including Mandalay Bay, Delano, Monte Carlo, New York-New York, Vdara, Aria, Bellagio, The Mirage and MGM Grand, the company said.

Valets were told during an afternoon employees' meeting that SP Plus will hire MGM Resorts' approximately 400 non-union parking service workers, and that they'll keep their pay, seniority, time off and health benefits.

Teamsters Union valet employees at Luxor, Excalibur and Circus Circus won't immediately be transferred to SP Plus, pending negotiations with union leaders, according to a company statement.

Corey Sanders, MGM Resorts International's chief operating officer, said publicly-traded SP Plus has experience handling paid parking that the publicly-traded casino company does not. "We determined the best-practice operation of our enhanced parking facilities required an expert hand," Sanders said in the statement.

The SP Plus contract is part of a $90 million parking upgrade that breaks with the long-cherished tradition of free parking on the Las Vegas Strip. Other casino owners have not yet said they'll follow suit.

SP Plus executive Robert M. Toy called Las Vegas a prestigious location for the company that employs 22,000 people and operates more than 2 million parking spaces at 3,900 parking facilities in North America. Its website lists 72 cities and counties around the U.S. including New York, Boston, New Orleans, Honolulu, Atlanta, Oklahoma City and Miami.

Tuesday's statement said the changeover to SP Plus will take place within 60 days ? coinciding with the April opening of MGM Resorts' new 20,000 T-Mobile Arena.

MGM Resorts has promised to make $36 million in upgrades to existing parking facilities and build a 3,000-space parking garage near the Excalibur, off Tropicana Avenue and Interstate 15, not far from T-Mobile Arena.

MGM Resorts International is the largest hotel-casino operator in Las Vegas, with more than 35,000 rooms and about 37,000 parking spots at various parking facilities on the Strip.

Parking fees are expected to be up to $10 for overnight self-parking at most company Strip properties. Participants in MGM Resorts loyalty programs may earn free parking rewards.

Valet parking will cost more, but officials have said some parking at the Circus Circus hotel and the Crystals and Mandalay Bay Place shopping centers will still be free, as will parking at MGM's properties in Mississippi, Michigan and China.

Dear Ronnie,

MGM Resorts International is taking steps to implement a $90 million parking strategy to expand parking availability, implement technology upgrades and reduce the hassle and frustration resulting from outdated and inefficient facilities.

In order to fund these investments?and the ongoing maintenance and capital improvements of our parking facilities?we will be instituting fees for self- and valet parking. Fees will begin to roll out at our Las Vegas hotels on June 6, 2016. These rates remain significantly below those of other highly popular tourism destinations.

As an M life Rewards Member:
? Once you've achieved Pearl tier status or above, you will receive complimentary self-parking.
? Once you've achieved Gold tier status or above, you will receive complimentary valet parking.
All parking is subject to availability.

The environment in Las Vegas has changed dramatically in the decades since amenities like low-quality dining, lodging and free parking were offered to attract customers. Growth in tourism and our local population?including many more cars on our local roadways?requires more parking availability, more efficient, modern parking systems and more frequent maintenance and upgrades to our aging facilities?all of which come at significant cost.

We have come to this decision with a great deal of care, particularly knowing we would be breaking with Las Vegas tradition. We are committed to continuing to develop the Las Vegas guest experience and hope that you will recognize the improvements during your next trip to one of our Las Vegas resorts.
