Try a zen garden and rake the gravel in a spiral pattern and terminate at the area drain at the middle. large rock along the edges with some ornamental statues and lanterns. Since this ia really a useless space meant only for light and ventilation. I doubt vegetation would grow and minimize dirt and other dead leaves and oraganic debris from clogging up the drain by not having plantings in the light shaft.
