So this is the first time I've been to this place.

It used to be called San Diego Wild Animal Park.

It reminded me of the old Lion Country Safari that used to be where Wild Rivers was (and soon... TIC apartments).

The big difference is you don't drive through it with your own car (which I think LCS also changed a while back).

You basically walk through the different areas like you would at a zoo but because they simulate more natural habitats... they are more spread out (which means you'll do a lot of walking).

You can take a tram tour for an additional cost that takes you out to the "African Plains" area or you can also do a flatbed truck tour and a few others (including a zipline that sends you over where the animals are).

It was surreal seeing gorillas, giraffes, elephants, rhinos, lions and tigers in a more open area. There was even a "Cheetah Run" where you got to watch a cheetah hit 70 mph running a 100 meter straight run.

If you like going to the zoo... I highly recommend this place... it's a bit out of the way but it's definitely worth the time and the trip. It's off the 78 near Escondido.

And in October, ALL kids are free.

Helpful Hint:  One of the most popular attractions is the butterfly reserve/atrium.  If you get to the park when it opens, head to this attraction first as the line gets extremely long later in the day.  They only let so many people in at once, so one person has to exit the attraction before another will be let in.

I brought my daughter here when she was 2 and it was one of the greatest moments seeing the look on her face as a butterfly landed on her shirt.  Great memory.
