Five people were killed Monday evening in a fiery crash in Newport Beach when a car smashed into a tree, split in half and burst into flames on one of the city's busiest thoroughfares.

The crash occurred about 5:20 p.m. on Jamboree Road near Island Lagoon Drive, according to Newport Beach Police Department spokeswoman Kathy Lowe.

Unfortunately, I am sure texting and/or alcohol are involved.  Reminds me of that horrific accident a few years back in Newport Beach.

Already dreading the days when my daughter gets to driving age.

I read somewhere that all 5 are from the Irvine area.  RIP.

A couple weeks ago, Mr. SoCal and I were just talking about what kind of car to get for our oldest starts when he starts to drive. I am highly in favor of something that only seats 2 or 3 i.e. a pickup, roadster, ugly Smart Car, Honda CRZ(? I forget which model doesn't have a back seat). ***The goal is to minimize distractions in the car!!!*** My parents did this with me, albeit unintentionally, but it worked brilliantly which is why I suggested it. I will never let my boy drive a van i.e. party on wheels. I've seen too much craziness with a car full of kids. Bucket seats preferred -- added benefit: no fogging up the windows with backseat dates!! A compact car is the perfect built-in excuse. "Sorry, no room." Yes, they might end up in someone else's packed car. Can't prevent everything. But I'm going to try to do what I can.

I am so sorry for the family that lost both daughters at once! Unimaginable.

I'm thinking the same thing... a pickup truck (although many have seating for 4 now).

I think it's just a matter of raising them right, if that kid, who already got pulled over for not having a license, continues to drive without one, that's a red flag.

I could keep my kids from getting a drivers license until they are 25, but that won't prevent them from riding in someone else's car.

I wonder if they were wearing seat belts because all the articles I read said they were thrown from the vehicle.

Yeah, definitely nix a king cab. My first vehicle was a Chevy S-10. Although it had a bench seat that could theoretically seat 3, I drove a manual transmission - the stick was on the floor and definitely rendered the middle seat useless. So, there's really only room for 1 distraction. Perfect, especially if that's just your kid's sibling and not a friend. That is another good deterrent for car dates, too, btw - stick in the way.  Unfortunately, fewer vehicles these days have a stick shift. However, no reclining seats are another big plus to keep them out of trouble! But I think kids will do unsafe things with a truck. A friend will get in the back and lay down for a ride.  ??? I did do dumb things like that with mine.

Also I want to keep horsepower in mind. If it was me, I'd get a Camaro or a Mustang I could drive on the weekends and share it with my boy.

But realistically, 400+ horsepower is going to get out from under a kid that age. I wouldn't feel safe giving mine the keys, as well-intentioned as he may be. Need more experience.

I think about that girl, Nikki, from Mission Viejo who took her dad's Porsche Halloween night on the toll road and got decapitated when she slammed into the toll booth here. I'm sure everybody knows what I'm talking about.

If we add traffic fatality to then Irvine will no longer be the safest city. Wait a minute they all perished in Newport Beach. That is the only positive thing to this tragedy.

I think it doesn't matter since the force to split a car into 2 would probably be enough to eject someone who's belted.

I would get a Scion IQ for my kid if I had one.

Easiest way to determine what car to buy your child is pretty simple.  Call the insurance company and get the insurance quote.

Those with the lowest quotes will have the lowest repair bills and injuries.  Both of which relate to the number and seriousness of accidents.

Soylent Yellow just reached the age where she can drive. We picked up a 1999 american made P.O.S. that had airbags, ABS, ect. It's going to be in an accident. I was a teen once (and my conestoga wagon hit someone.... there, I got that out of the way...) and these things are inevitable. Soylent Yellow wanted a Mini, but given the risk of truck vs Mini wrecks, why risk it we said. The right vehicle that won't turn into a race car in our mind can help prevent a more serious accident from happening.

Our neighbor found a teen driving event held once a month at Saddleback College. They take kids through extended reverse driving, wet driving skids, even lets them spin out the car under controlled circumstances just to give them the feeling of how to adapt in situations like this. For $375 it was the best money he said he's ever spent. I'm going to sign Soylent Yellow up soon and will update when possible.

As noted above, if the driver was stopped, yet kept on going after the warning, there's the problem in a nutshell.

My .02c

It's such a sad news. On Friday husband spotted a car full of teens with a bottle of whiskey in the back seater's hand- they were having just too much fun to drive responsibly. He did call Irvine police and let them know. Don't know what happened next.

Scares me- kid will soon start having friends who can drive. I am not even worried about her driving at this point!

This is sad:

Read an article in the OC Reg this morning on how the parents of the sisters found out. I'm paraphrasing because OCReg has that paywall but they texted the daughter to find out what time they were coming home and got no response so they used the Find My iPhone app to track her phone and saw it wasn't moving from Jamboree. Then they saw it move to Mission Viejo and that it went to Mission Viejo Hospital which made them go there but no one said their daughters checked in. When they tracked the phone again, they saw it moving to Santa Ana and they thought it was a police station and went there to see what happened. They were told it wasn't a police station, but the Coroner's office.

That is what nightmares are made of.

:( IHO.. this post of yours brought a weird feeling.. like metal taste in the mouth.

That's because your blood pressure dropped sharply has you internalized the shock.

I wouldn't wish that on anyone. (The parents, not you, although I wouldn't wish you fainting over either.  Been there, done that, got the scar and ER bill)

Sadly, been seeing the news and the DMV is starting to look keystone kop-ish and the media has been running with the no license, but now trying to figure out how he had a provisional.

So either said driver had fake DL and the Irvine PD didn't catch it or the DMV has screwed up records or his DL was suspended, however the whole thing now seems to be backpeddling on what his license status really was...

And the media is running with the speeds of 100MPH, which is reporting gossip of some stupid political aide, granted, enough speed to split a car in half is self-evident that speed was a factor.

So, any over under pools on them having seen Fast and Furious 6 on the weekend?
