Roth IRAs for education?

Read an article about funding Roth IRAs for children instead of 529s because Roth can be used for education or retirement. Anyone done that? Thinking in that direction?

I've read and been told that you should prioritize your retirement first and your children's education second. You can always get loans for college... not so for when you retire.

So yes... Roth IRA > 529.

I didn't phrase the question correctly.. Assuming you have maxed out your retirement, how would you invest for your child's education? 529s? Roth IRAs under their name? Or invest in your name and give the proceeds to them as and when needed?

I thought they had to have earned income to put money in their Roth IRA.

For our own kids, their modelling/acting career doesn't seem to be taking off, so we're continuing to attempt to fund the 529s.
