Role of Design consultants from Builder

We are buying our first home and wondering if the design consultants that we meet with to pick upgrades on the house are merely salespeople, or real consultants. For instance, is it OK to ask their opinion on how a certain wall color would go with a certain carpet, etc.  from an interior decorator's perspective?

Good question.

I do think they have some design chops... not sure if they have actual certification or schooling specifically for it. You should ask them that question and see how they respond.

In our experience it was perfectly ok to ask them anything and everything.  We told them straight away that we are painting afterwards but asked them for assistance in choosing colors.  Additionally, we installed lighting afterwards as well.  They were very helpful.  In fact, they didn't push any upgrades on us.  But each builder may be different.

My design consultant was very nice and was not the pushy sales type.  She helped us with upgrade selection and color coordination.  We told her what we wanted and didn't want and she did not have any issue and went along with it.

I assume they do get some type of commission, so depending on the consultant, you may have different experience.

There might actually be a paradoxical sales pitch.  I am a little suspicious that some of the representatives might be paid a salary (with a minimal commission) and thus sometimes don't want to work as hard as you might expect - especially with showing you all the options (i.e. different flooring or counter surfaces)
