There are a lot of great restaurant reviews and shopping tips scattered around the forums. I thought a a thread like this might complement the wine and beer discussions. Anybody had a good experience to report? Maybe a cautionary tale?

anyone else has the experience of playing wack-a-fly on lucille's patio? my wife was quite impressed how half a dozen flies can keep our boys entertained throughout the meal!

<p>I thought that odd until I remembered that we have few flies here, relatively speaking.</p>

<p>Maybe that explains RE at $500/sq ft. None of those damn flies!</p>

<strong>Old Vine Cafe </strong>in Costa Mesa may be one of the best meals I've had in OC, if not Southern California (full disclosure: the chef and owner, two brothers, are friends of the family).

I went Friday. Low key, small, out of the way, and very wine-oriented. Please give them a try.

I find it hard to drive past McCormick and Schmick's on Main at Happy Hour, knowing there is a $1.95 cheeseburger, oyster shooters, and steamed mussels waiting for me. It's usually really busy in the bar area (I think it is called the Pilsner room), but the wait staff is good and keeps the drinks coming fast. Live music some nights as well. I always find that I end up spending at least an hour or two longer there than I intended....So I guess that's the mark of a good happy hour.

<p>Healthy Fast Food</p>

<p>Well, since I "discovered" this place, I've been a frequent customer. That day the unusual long line exactly at noon told me that something good should be in there. Fish tacos?! Rubio's is the best, what else can be out there?...yeah, right!...never been in Rubio's since then!</p>

<p>The name of the place is Baja Fish Tacos and the place that I frequently go is located in Bristol near Mc Arthur.</p>

<p>It's inexpensive and has a very good almost home made flavor. usually is crowded Fridays and they have Mexican beer 50% off after 3pm and weekends.</p>

<p>To my surprise is one of the few taco restaurants, probably the only one, where all the ethnicities are there eating together, particularly Asians, which I have not seen in other taco restaurants or Mexican restaurants, based on my own observation, I could be wrong.</p>

second to yardhouse happy hour...

Johnny Rockets at the District has been doing server testing in evenings...free food in other words. Just be patient and tip well to be cool.

<p>Hey, I was thinking of starting a thread like this! I like the family-owned joints that have stood the test of time. This means they serve good food and have great prices. Not sure if you can find joints like these in Irvine or other newer and/or expensive communities because it takes a while to develope a customer base and high land costs (which means high rents) make it difficult for the mom-and-pop places to turn a profit without charging high prices.</p>

<p>My two favorite family-owned restaurants in the OC are:</p>

<p>El Farilito's (Placentia on Bradford) - Best Mexican food around! I've heard that Mexicans from LA travel to eat there. They've been in business since 1971, so they know what they are doing. Be careful of their homemade chips and salsa. It is very easy to fill up on them before dinner arrives! Good prices with entree's under $10. It is located in "Placentita" which is a quaint area of Placentia.</p>

<p>Cortina's (<a href="http://www.cortinasitalianfood.com/about.htm">http://www.cortinasitalianfood.com/about.htm</a>) - Their lasagna is awesome! Love the fennel in it. The pizzeria and the deli share a common building. Note that they are closed on Tuesdays and close at 4PM on Sunday. You can only do that when you are an established institution with an established clientele base.</p>

<p>Hadaka Sushi. West Hollywood, CA.</p>

<p>Yes, there's video.</p>

Try Bandera for prime rib. Its excellent, and i've been on quite a quest to find the best prime rib in OC.

Best meal I've ever had in the OC though....Club 33. For sure.
