Replacing side gate

My wood side gate is beyond repair/sanding/painting.  Thinking bout going with a metal one for cleaner looks.  Would this be DIY?  I'm thinking this requires drilling into cement and lots of measurements I'm not used to.  I can hang a picture on a wall, but not sure about hanging a gate on the side wall.  Plus it would need to accomodate movements in earth/soil.  Anyone has good recs for companies, please post.  Thinking of calling a few fencing companies that advertise in the mailers.

ps9... you're like me... just hire it out.

Unless you have the time. Or maybe Tyler can lend a hand (although I think while he knows how to install one, he would rather hire someone else to do it).

I can probably pay Tyler with beers but he might finish off the payment before he's done with the gate :).  Maybe 1 beer upfront and 5 to follow?

Blehhhh, not a honey do list but a HOA do list :(  just received email saying I'll need architectural committee approval to replace my side gate.  Great, gates stink (ironic huh?)

How wide is the entry?  My neighbor and I put in my driveway gate...about 12' wide.  DIY yes, but probably not a 1-person job at that size.  It's vinyl-covered metal, and I like it.  Durable finish, strong structure.  Ought to last 20-30 years.http://vinyl-concepts.com/home.nxg

Called them for a quote, they're kinda booked but was able to squeeze me in next week.  So what are the advantages of this product over wood or metal gates?

I wish...if i start doing other folks "honey do" list before i finish my own, i'll be sleeping outside  :'(

There's a bunch of good looking gates here too:

those costco ones are nice, but i would need to paint code match them to the house and would look kinda ugly with the finish, more taupe/beige

The gates are metal, but with vinyl coverings.  The vinyl is more durable than paint, and easy to clean.  Stronger and lower maintenance than wood and should hold up better over time.  The metal structure is galvanized and will eventually rust, but looks good up until that point.  20-30 years is what my contractor neighbor told me.  Keep a checklist of all the details to work out, like latching, hinges, stops, gaps, wiring, etc and go through each one.

So what's the code? If you get a metal gate it can be black or white, but if you get a wood/vinyl gate, it has to be color matched to the HOA palette?

I like the look of those metal gates but I like the privacy of a slat gate (so I can throw out trash in my house wear)... and would get a vinyl one because of the durability, lower weight and easier maintenance.

Finally got it done.  Decided to go with wrought iron gate:

Ruled out vinyl pretty quick, looks and feels cheap.  And about the same cost as metal, so going with iron is a no brainer for us.  Tom's Iron Works came out for a free estimate.  Did measurements and drew it out on the quote.  He has an album of gate pictures for you to choose.  My wife was able to customize what she wanted by combining two different designs.  Price was just a tad under $600 and they take CC.  Submitted plan to HOA and got it approved.  Only thing we need to change for HOA approval was from sheet metal to mesh.  Took them about three hours for the install, remember to specify what color knob you wanted.  At first they were gonna do brass but we were able to get it changed to silver.  Communicating with Tom and staff can be difficult at times due to slight language barrier.  If you know Korean, it is a definite plus!  Onto my next project:  maybe kitchen/bath?

Here is a quality installer that was recommended and has done work for many in Newport Beach.

Let's go halfsies on consulting with Zerolot. :)

Thanks for the vote of confidence!  lol

I do like Calbath http://www.calbath.com/  for their really professional bath remodeling.  It's a family owned business and they come with warranty too.

I went cheap and got a Lowe's bath tub 5 years ago and I am spending $$ replacing it because my kids broke it this month.

But Calbath is on the higher end and more $$$$.  I've decided to hire a handyman to replace the bath tub since I'm moving to CV anyway.  The new owner doesn't have kids so it'll last for him.

If you've got kids, go more higher end with your bath decisions.  That's the moral of my story.  :P

What kind of break? Maybe it can be fixed instead of replaced. I've had several bathtubs reglazed. Came out amazing. Can fix chips and cracks. Can make a twenty year old tub look brand new. Quick & painless. Consider reglazing.

A giant 6" crack in an acrylic tub ... on the back end where it arches up.  I already tried reglazing and the cheap Lowe's acrylic bath tubs can't be reglazed.  :(

I asked for a bath liner but liners can't be made either for the Lowe's acrylic bath/shower installs either.
