I was looking at some blue ribbon schools in Orange County and noticed that the "Newport-Mesa" school district hast two good schools that feature on the list. How is the Newport-Mesa school district in your opinion? I think Irvine is getting seriously overbought and oversought (how poetic:). I realize that people living in Costa Mesa are able to tap into the Newport-Mesa school district. Am I missing something here? It seems like you could live in CM and your kids could go to great schools under the Newport-Mesa school district.

It's the schools in the wealthy part of CM and of course NB that are pretty good. The ones in the more affordable part of CM are pretty bad. If I had kids, I'd opt for private rather than the pubic schools here in SW CM. It would still be cheaper than Irvine.

Stepping Up, if I hypothetically live in a bad area of CM, is it true that I cannot send my children to Newport Mesa school district? Are there zip code restrictions? If yes, how would I know what these restrictions are? Thank you so much for your input.

Irvine Renters and others, this might be an interesting analysis to do - is Irvine's highly hyped school district worth the premium paid in home prices? Does the cost of private schools overtake the cost of living in Irvine? There has to be a parity decision here that makes one decide to go for one set of schools over another?

Now, look at the ratings of the school for the neighborhood you would be looking at and notice which schools only offer the accountability report in English. Scroll down one of these reports to pages 7-9 and you'll see some pretty ugly figures of how few of these kids actually test proficient in just about every subject.

Check out: <a href="http://www.greatschools.net/">"Great Schools" website</a>. You can search for a school in the proposed area and find out much information on it - everything from demographics to test scores, parent ratings, etc.

Also you should be able to visit the school district's website to view its boundary map and their policy on enrollment and transfers.

P.S. There is some similar discussion in this thread: <a href="http://www.irvinehousingblog.com/forums/viewthread/3522/">http://www.irvinehousingblog.com/forums/viewthread/3522/</a>

CM elementary schools:

The two best schools in CM (kaiser/mariners) are east of the 55/newport, but the prices on the east side are still quite high.

There are a couple of very good schools on the west side, victoria, and a few in mesa verde/ mesa del norte: california, killeybrooke, and sonora. (all ~850 api)

you can apply for a transfer within the district to the best schools, but of course the waiting list is long...

A small part of SW CM has crappy elementary schools, but feeds into the newport middle/high school, which is a huge bargain if you have older kids.

The only problem that I've identified with private schools is that kids don't get to play with kids in the neighborhood because kids come from all over the place.

However, my own kid goes to VV and it's the same as private school because kids are also from all over the place. She does not have any friend in the same housing area. But she has friends live in close enough distance that she can either walk or bike to.

Victoria is a blue ribbon schools which is on the Westside of Costa Mesa though most of the best testing schools are on the Eastside of Costa Mesa or in Newport Beach.

It can be difficult to obtain inner district transfers. However, I have known people to obtain transfers to Huntington Beach which also has some great schools. Sometimes the transfer to Huntington can be easier than transfers within Newport-Mesa.
