Proportion of Asians in Irvine

While Irvine's official Asian population is 43% of the city (2012), many citizens give inflated figures, i.e. that 98% are Asian. Yet whites are still the majority. Will this always be the case? What is the highest proportion the Asian population will reach?

It also seems like recently whites have been increasing and Asians decreasing in proportion. I went to Woodbury Town Center at Thanksgiving last year and 90% of the shoppers were non-Asian.

That's because they don't have 99 Ranch market there.

The biggest family Holiday is Thansgivings for Caucasians and so much is focused on homemade meals and gathering around the Kitchen. Before Thanksgivings Caucasians shop like crazy for food preparation. Chinese would rather eat out at the restaurants ordering Peking duck, Crispy Chicken or soy sauce chicken. The Chinese equivalence of Thanksgings would be the Family dinner during the Lunar Chinese New Year Eve. That is when they are busy shopping for groceries and not likely at Woodbury Center. I am using Chinese as an example because Chinese comprise a majority or the Asian population and FCBs.

If you are referring to Black Friday after Thanksgivings then you went to the wrong place for Asian sighting.

Compare the demographics of the older villages with the new & that is where you will see the difference. One figure for the entire 66 square mile city does not tell the full story of how that is dispersed.

IHS is absolutely right about Thanksgiving.

Look at the two different life styles and think about what they would guess is the Asian percentage in Irvine.

Person 1 -
Their life entails of driving to Ralphs off Jeffrey and Alton across from Woodbridge to do their weekly shopping. Eats primarily at home.  When one does eat out, they go to Stonefire grill or the Mexican place on the corner of Alton and Jeffrey. Their favorite place to shop at the mall is Mission Viejo mall.

Person 2 -
They enjoy eating out and frequent the various restaurants off of Jeffrey and Walnut or the strip mall off of Culver.  They come to find that produce at various grocery stores like Zion and 99 Ranch Market is often much less expensive.

These two people are going to see a large discrepancy in races that they come across.

There are days that I am in Irvine that I could document well over 75% Asian population by counting.

There are days that I am in Irvine that I could document a much smaller percentage depending on what I am doing that day.

Census is usually the best idea.  Also, there are pockets in Irvine with a variance in ethnic make up.

(at least from what I have heard...)

I lived in Irvine for one year, so that makes me a non expert, haha.

Quail Hill as an example seems to have a slight majority of Asians versus Caucasians. Maybe its just me, but I'd like to think Irvine is becoming a city without a clear ethnic majority (for me this is a positive thing) when taken as a whole, even if some villages or smaller neighborhoods tend to have more of one ethnic group than another. I would also suspect that there may indeed an ethnic balancing act at work in Irvine, with one ethnic group more prominent in purchases one year over another year, but retaining a pluralistic mix over time.
