http://www.nytimes.com/2015/06/09/u...spute-leads-to-police-officer-suspension.htmlMcKINNEY, Tex. ? No lives were lost. The incident played out at a suburban pool party, not an urban neighborhood struggling with crime and drugs.
But perhaps it was that suburban setting that helped make the images so powerful and disturbing. Now a video of a police officer pointing a gun at teenagers in bathing suits and shoving a young black girl?s face into the ground has become the latest flash point in relations between the police and minorities.
The cellphone video, taken at the community pool in Craig Ranch, a racially diverse subdivision north of Dallas, has set off another debate over race and police tactics, with activists calling for the officer to be fired and others arguing that the blame should fall at least in part on the teenagers.
This incident was pretty unfair to the officer in that the scene was pretty crazy and the pool party was getting out of the control. I think the officer pulled the gun because he was scared of the surrounding people. Of course, he probably would be better off just backing off rather than trying to arrest the girl. I definitely see race as a factor though.
I posted this topic because McKinney was listed by Money.com as the best place to live in the US...which sounds eeriely similar to Irvine's safest big city reputation. I hope nothing like this will happen here in Irvine but Irvine PD doesn't exactly have the same reputation.
