I did not respond at all and no follow up e-mail was sent.

Paypal has set up an email you can forward these kinds of messages to so they can investigate and maybe prosecute the guilty. spoof@paypal.com

I've gotten response emails in the past but they seem automated. It can't hurt to forward them on I guess so they keep track of the variants of phishing emails that are being sent.

Paypal in and of itself is a scam, IMO. I began using them for Ebay transactions a few months ago and have had nothing but problems. They are a nightmare.

As a buyer? Or as a seller?

I've only used Paypal to buy things, so my experience is limited. But I've only had positive experiences. In fact I once "won" an auction on Ebay that ended up being a scam. (The seller never sent the item I won) and Paypal stepped in and refunded my money completely.

My negative experiences with them were a result of being on the selling end. One example is that I was selling some low-priced items on Ebay. I was getting positive feedback left for me before the buyers even paid and the transaction was complete, which of course seemed odd. But the buyers paid, the items were sent, and Ebay then sent me a notice saying I was involved in feedback manipulation scam and suspended my account before I could leave reciprocal feedback. I was completely caught off guard. I am an honest person and would never do such a thing but then I realized that's why the buyers were leaving me great feedback immediately. They didn't care if they actually got my item. They were just paying for feedback. So just because I didn't get to leave them feedback, they went to Paypal demanding refunds (this is AFTER my return period of 2 weeks had ended.) Paypal sided with them even though I spent time trying to prove my case and forwarding emails from Ebay. In another case I sold a DVD player, the guy kept it 3 MONTHS, then told me he didn't know how to use it and thought he might have broken it (he refused to read the manual) - even though he admitted he doesn't know how to operate it, waited 3 months without ever contacting me, and I had the emails to prove it, he told Paypal I sold him a broken product and Paypal sided with him. And in that case, according to Paypal's user agreement, this purchase was ineligible for buyer protection because the seller rating (mine) was not a certain number of feedbacks that it has to be for the purchase to qualify. But it didn't matter. They still decided in his favor. They totally lack seller protection in my opinion. Also when you receive payment from anyone - Paypal claims they only charge you a fee if the buyer pays with a credit card. Not true. They will skim the credit even if the buyer paid out of their account balance. The list goes on. I would never recommend them to anybody, particularly a seller.

Wow, I'm sorry to hear that. From a buyers perspective, it makes things more comfortable. Most of the time transactions I have made on Ebay have been uneventful. But I won an auction for a coin. The seller had 100% positive feedback at the time I bid on the coin, and it was a good value for the coin itself. I paid with Paypal. After about a week, I still didn't have my coin and hadn't heard from the seller, so I sent him a friendly email asking if there were any problems. He apologized for the delay and said he would send it out the next day. 5 days later I still hadn't heard from him and didn't have my coin. (Which was supposedly being sent from Phoenix)

Well, I am not sure if it was a hacked account, or a good seller gone bad, but he had about 25 auctions running at the time I won my auction. All for coins in the $500 to $1000 range. He ripped off every single one of us. Paypal stepped in and gave me a full refund. It took about 3 weeks, but I still got all of my money (including shipping costs) back.

Sorry to hear SoCal.....

I've been a buyer and a seller and have luckily never had a problem with PayPal.

Those scams are getting to be a problem now. They're getting better at their trickery.

I have used PayPal since 2001. Mostly for items related to my business via E-Bay.

Never had an issue that resulted in a loss. Sure they charge too much.

But its a good service for medium sized transactions. Lets say under $ 1000.00

You need to be very careful of phishing and scams these days

I once got "paid" with a few thousand dollars worth of Postal Money Orders for a car that I listed on ebay. I sent the money orders to the FBI and did not hear from the FBI. When I called the FBI, I was told they were too busy to investigate.
