Above is the list of things I considered before deciding the irvine premium was worth the price... This list does not include schools which i would assume most everyone would pick as your #1...  So what would be number two on your list? (if IUSD is not your #1, please comment)... If you'd like to comment on the order please share (above is my order of importance).

?You ever notice when people talk about where they live as a good place to raise kids, what they?re trying to say is, ?Where I live is really segregated.? [pause] A little too close to home for you, Orange County??

Large Japanese community and all that goes with that is why Irvine is our choice.....  hopefully will be there in 2012.

Large Japanese community in Irvine?  I see a small Japanese community in Irvine but a large Chinese/Korean community in Irvine.  That is if we are only speaking about the Asian communities.  If we bring all other non-white races into the mix, then...

Some of those are a bit dependent on or intertwined with others.

Everyone probably wants to live in a safe 'hood that is relatively close to not only work but also family/friends.

I used to want to live by the ocean... but it's too far away from everything else.

Both wife and I work from home but number 1 was still our reason for choosing Irvine.  Its becoming the job center of OC and while we enjoy working from home today, I dont know if that will always be the case and being close to work is a big deal.  I used to drive 80+ miles to San Diego and back every day for over a year and commuting sucks.  I have friends in south OC who work in Irvine and it takes over 30 min each way.  Thats not that bad but I imagine will only get worse as OC gets more built out.

I think shopping and entertainment also come with it being the job center.  You get a lot more closer to downtowns normally.

Large is a relative term.  In terms of percentage of population its not Hawaii by any means, but, it is large enough (seems they represent about 5% of the community) for our needs and have the items that are important to us including Japanese speaking drs, Japanese language schools, Japanese pre-schools,  supermarkets, etc.  and based on our research its far more centralized than the communities in the San Diego area.

For us it was schools and jobs.
Added bonus: If we go out for an evening stroll with the kids, 99% of the times we don't have to explain freedom of expression, freedom of choice.. Pasadena and SFO made me talk about things I didn't want to talk about just yet.

That is true compared to the rest of the OC.  I guess I am from the mindset of where I grew up (Gardena/Torrance) which had a large Japanese community when I was there.
