There's nothing like a black president to bring out all of the hidden prejudice. This type of thinking is so commonplace for them that they can't even see it. If they could, I'm sure they'd think twice. I firmly believe that these people don't have any idea what they are doing, it's just who they are.

Conversely, one could argue that the lack of awareness is not due to ingrained racism, but rather a complete and utter lack of racist thoughts. If you were not raised with racism, that picture would hold zero context for you, while it would be loaded with meaning if you were President of the KKK.
 
Where would anyone get that idea?

Come on, Oscar, then why a watermelon? Not to start a whole new crazy thing, but how many fruits and are there to choose from and why did this particular one end up in the pic?

Look, you claimed this is so commonplace that they can't even see it and that they have no idea what they are doing. If that is true, then the picture would hold not racist implications to the Mayor or whomever else approved this. I pointed out another possible reason for ignorance; innocence.



You didn't charge the mayor with intentional racist behavior, so why are you acting as if I was apologizing for him and asking me for an explanation? He's the twit that said "White House lawn with watermelons, brilliant! Email it to everyone!", so go ask him.
 
I said they can't see it, I didn't say it wasn't racist. It's just ingrained. I'm just saying that in many cases racism is so much a part of a person that it fails to be something they can see in any objective manner.
