At least it keeps things spicy and fresh.  [Maybe] we['ll] get more members because of the increased traffic.  >=)

the comment above is from another thread, and i didn't want to hijack it, but usc's comments brings up a question i've been wanting to ask... after the ihb forums were dismantled (of which i posted a few times)... i didn't know where everyone went... and since i was looking in aliso shortly after, i didn't really keep up... fast forward 1+ years... and i'm back to looking for a home in irvine... went back to ihb and it was the same old "irvine sucks... why are people paying these prices"... and "these knife catchers are going to be screwed"... etc, etc...

then i found talkirvine, which was a breath of fresh air... since not everyone here is a complete bear... and the discussions were about different topics... but recently i found ocreader (although i haven't joined)...

so just wondering.. why are there two sites?  i thought i read something about people on that blog having beef with people over here (lol) and iho being banned from their site?  bkshpr is someone i remember from the old forums... how come he doesn't post here (i do appreciate his thoughts on architecture stuff... not so much on his generalizations of different ethnicities).  i don't care for the blog software or format that ocr uses... but it'd be nice if everyone just use one site, preferably, talkirivine... although i can see that the name "talkirvine" is not as encompassing.

any info or thoughts on this would be appreciated... "Enquiring minds want to know!"

There was a handful of former IHB members that created OCR.  They are not the biggest fans of Irvine and wanted to create their own forum.  TalkIrvine is definitely the more "kinder and gentler" forum compares to OCR as it feels a bit like if you aren't a part of the "in" crowd then you and your differing options are not always welcomed (hopefully that will change in time).  Posting differing options is not for the timid or the faint of heart, you better have thick skin and stand up for yourself (I know this first hand as does IHO).  haha

Just to clarify, no one at OCR banned me. There was no public dispute or problem with OCR as a whole that led me to not to post there for an extended period of time. After some discussions with some of the people I am familiar with over there, I decided to start up again (plus OCR needs a little bit of 3CWG-love for balance).

It would be nice if some of their members with knowledge of Irvine (and even non-Irvine things) would pop back in here occasionally.

Is OC Reader still up?  I tried today and couldn't get on
Yup, still there....last post activity was on Sept. 26th.  Looks like that site is dying a slow painful death.

lol didnt even know there was another forum...

lol skimming through it, im not surprised the forum posters on either side dont get along... the other forum tends give me a feeling that they are more anti-development and posters there want the "older" irvine of the 90's back focusing on the cons of development (demographic shifts, rising cost of homes/cost of living, rising population density) whereas TIC posters seems to be a bit more accepting to development

dunno... reminds me slightly of tension that always occurs between older community residences vs newer community residences

They're not really anti-development... just anti-"too high prices for less-than-stellar designs".

lol u mean like in order to buy a home with a good design ppl have to resort to lambert ranch at 1m+ a pop?... sigh... that is the reality though... ppl can wham about it all day, not going to change much

or bail on TheOC, sacrificing weather for quality of life
Speaking of... when I see all this superstorm Sandy stuff... it makes me appreciate SoCal more.

I'm sure when the Big Earthquake hits... I won't be thinking that... but I still think it's better than John's Creek.

eh, pick your poison.  Fires and earthquakes versus  whatever storms in various parts of the country.

For my new location, we just got winds and a few inches of rain.  Could have snow coming soon, though.

Sacrificing it always being 75 and sunny, and always being able to do outdoors stuff, was the biggest trade-off.  But we got what would be a $1M plus house in Socal for less than our townhouse in Aliso, so we can do stuff in our 1250sf finished daylight lower level when it is cold and rainy.

Where did you move?? I didn't realize you left the area.

I don't think I sacrifice quality of life living in the OC.  There's more to life than large homes and huge yards.  I've lived for long periods of time on both coasts as well as in another country and to-date, Orange County has been one of my favorite places to live.  Can it be a bit sleepy and boring... sure, but at this stage of my life.... sleepy and boring isn't so bad.

i totally agree with u... im actually kind of looking forward to sleepy and boring too haha...

QoL:  We were in a 3/2.5 townhouse in Aliso with only a private patio.  Now 4000sf, 4/3.5 with "Viking" kitchen on 1/3 acre.  Makes a difference with kids.  (oh, and better schools than Irvine).  (just have to accept "different" weather...)

Also, same monthly housing cost (and I got a raise with the move), so QoL includes easier ability to afford "perks" (trips, kid activities, etc) while still saving for retirement.

SoCal:  moved to home of the little yellow box

hah, was in Costa Mesa, and kept thinking that I would move back after the bubble.  Then when i got married, moved down by the pier in HB.  Then with kid#1, Aliso (laguna audubon).  Now with #2, little yellow box.

If I was still in CA, I would still be trying to buy a MCM off east 19th, or a mesa-bluff house....
