No-tipping policy: Joe's Crab Shack bows out but 2 local restaurants stand firm

After opening Restaurant Marin last month, Howarth said she could easily spot when a customer was not aware of the diner?s no-tipping policy.

?I can tell when I see their eyeballs,? Howarth said.

When eyes widen over a $22 breakfast sandwich or a $17 plate of doughnut holes, Howard said she quickly explains that menu prices include hospitality ? so there?s no gratuity at the end of the meal.

Lol  and the "tip-after" price of a breakfast sandwich would be what?  $18.xx?  Still a high price for a breakfast sandwich.

I don't see this gaining a lot of traction.  So they increased their prices 20%, which is high for average tips, and now their customers have to pay another ~10% tax on that increase.  This means the proprietor now shoulders more risk during slow times.  You can only send so many servers home and still keep the doors open.  Plus, the servers' incentives are no longer aligned directly with the customers' wants.  Finally, when the shift is over and the doors close, the owners get to pay the servers $20-25/hour to clean and restock the serving areas.  I wonder what they pay the cooks?  If I were a restaurant owner, this would never make sense to me.
