According to the October Portola Spring Newsletter the 15-acre parcel land bordered by Portola Parkway and Portola Springs Road might be the new site for the Portola Spring Elementary school. The Board of Education is expected to vote on the land exchange in spring 2014. If approved, the district would look to open a school in fall 2015 to accommodate students living in Portola Springs.

So, bye-bye retail center and say hello to school! I have a mixed feeling towards this new plan since it would be convenient to have a grocery store near by, but having a school would be awesome, too. No more pickup-dropoff nightmare at Stonegate Elementary School.

Ugh. I'd hate this. I'm willing to put up with traffic if I also get some benefit from it (ie a shopping center with stores I might go to), but a school has the downsides (traffic, pedestrians) without the benefit for me, a childless person. Ugh. I hope not.

I thought PS is supposed to end up with 2 elementary schools? My older son will be starting elementary school in 2015 so getting a school a year early would be good. Are you sure it's instead of the shopping center?

Name that school

The interim elementary school site for the residents of Portola Springs and Lambert Ranch communities is scheduled to open in the fall of 2014 at the Westwood Training Center. The permanent school site is located in Portola Springs and is scheduled to open in the fall of 2015.

Past practice when a school opens at an interim site has been to name the permanent school as soon as possible in order to provide an identity for the school community.  This also allows sufficient time for construction related items such as interior/exterior signage manufacturing as well as providing clarity in potential home buyer disclosure packets.

In accordance with Board Policy 7140, elementary schools shall be named by using either an adjacent street, park, or village name. The proposed school site is located at the corner of Portola Parkway and Portola Springs Road.  Additionally neighboring streets include Archway, Long Grass, Modjeska and Pathway.

While the Board considers this item, it may be helpful to note that there are currently schools named Portola Hills Elementary and de Portola Elementary in the Saddleback Valley Unified School District.

Staff requests the Board consider the names provided below:

1)    Portola Springs Elementary School

2)    Portola Elementary School

3)    Archway Elementary School

4)    Long Grass Elementary School

5)    Modjeska Elementary School

6)    Pathway Elementary School

7)    Landfill Elementary School
